I fail to see how a thermostat or an "automatic shutoff" prevents fires. Like most drivel they write and do not define, what is an automatic shutoff? Are we shutting it off if it gets knocked over or shutting it off after X hours of use? Is a thermostat not technically an "automatic shutoff"
The heaters need to be certified by a body recognized by DOL and OSHA? Wait, what? DOL and OSHA regulate the workplace not the heaters in your house. OSHA specifically will not approve anything or any procedure. The only people that certify heaters are UL or ETL.

Requires electric space heaters to have thermostats, automatic shut-offs and be certified by a testing and certification body recognized and approved by the United States department of labor, occupational safety and health administration.
This bill does absolutely nothing. I repair electronics on the side and I've seen where the bimetallic fuses get stuck thus causing a run away anyhow. Especially if the heater was kept in a garage or damp environment. They generally have a bimetallic and a one-time-shot thermal fuse, but it depends how it's designed. Along with whatever furnishing was in front of the heater. So cutoffs might not do anything at all.
Another primary cause of space heater fires is the use of light duty extension cords, surge strips or incorrect gauge wiring in the walls. They are NOT designed for the current. So it's not the space heater that caused the fire, it was in this case in proper equipment used to power the space heater.
I also treat space heaters as mini fires.... they are to be kept under constant watch at all times.

Yet another BS law that will do nothing. Sucks that people died in the fire, I do not know any of them so they do not matter to me. I do not use these types of heaters so this law will not affect me at all.

Why not ban cigarettes? There are probably thousands of fires every year because people are careless with them.

The number of people that try to run a space heater on one of those lamp extension cords is mind boggling. Never run one on an extension cord, but if you choose to ignore that advice make sure it's a 12 gauge or thicker cord. There is a reason the NEC requires 6/12 foot spacing (or less) on outlets. This requirement has been code since 1956. Electrical Code Requirements for Outlets in the Home
Yes, also don't leave space heaters running unattended. It's not a central heating system. They can tip over, etc.
To be fair, this is not a ban. It's setting minimum standards for new space heaters being sold, not saying you cannot own space heaters or need to stop using ones you already have. The requirements are pretty much already done, minus the OSHA part, which seems a bit... weird. I have been using one of those kerosene trash can heaters in a room I am remodeling. Had the room up to 117 degrees without any of that dangerous non-renewable electricity.

I'm thinking Hochul missed a 16 hour safety training mandate before allowing a transfer of a space heater. No sales to convicted arsonist and banning campfires in the living room. Maybe a candle ban.

Screw her and her useless bans. I have a space heater that is about 10 years old to warm up my back room that is all windows. Its is about 5 degrees cooler in that room than the rest of the house. The heater works well and I am not giving it up. It has no thermostat and no tip over shut off. That room is where our office is. My wife used it more frequently than I do. I guess I am even more of a criminal in NY now.
