When I glanced at the thread title all I saw was, "Hochul proposes repeal..." I was excited thinking she was repealing the Safe Act.

She’s only doing it because the tax is driving people to buy weed illegally. I’m not sure why this new tax won’t do the same but she has egg on her face. I’ll bet they didn’t make half the proposed amount in taxes they said, illegal trade is stronger than legal sales, and many are driving high… all things they said wouldn’t happen.

I think a large part of the lack-luster commercial sales issue is the fact that people can GYO for pennies on the dollar compared to paying premium $ then piling an excessive sin tax on top of that! If you have any green in your thumb, you can probably grow a weed successfully.
And then there is the black market trade that has existed as a pretty successful operation for many decades...it's hard to break into business when facing an opponent who controls 100% of the market (especially when your a bunch of bumbling pea-brained bureaucrats)!

They didnt get the tax $$$ they hoped for because they didnt have any retail outlets to sell the product. My neighbor sat on a whole years crop for a year, over 1200 lbs. She was lucky she had proper storage facilities to hold it, but that cost her a fortune too, most growers dont have the proper storage and lost a lot of their crop.She finally resorted to selling it off herself. Now they allow her and other farms to sell, not under full license but as some kind of "growers showcase", problem with that for her is location, theres absolutely no traffic nearby. Its been 3 yrs since they ok'd this shit and there is still only a handful of retail locations. NYS could fuck up a wet dream.

Here in the area of the Indian reservation, the Indians have cornered the weed market. First off, of course, there is no tax on the weed or anything else sold on the reservation. Secondly, the weed shops are selling their product at a quarter of the price the black market dudes can sell it for and still be worthwhile for them.
Weed -
Reservation - Half an ounce = $50
Black market - Half an ounce = $200ish
At those prices, I'm told it's not even worth growing your own when considering the additional cost of electricity used and that sort of stuff.
My Indian friends tell me even at those prices the dispensaries are making big profits. The prices vary depending on the strain. The prices that I posted here are the low to mid-grade strains but you get the idea. There are a lot of weed dispensaries on the reservation.
Everything from the big smoke shops to small (weed-only) shops.
Another advantage that dispensaries have over the black market is that dispensaries have a lot of different strains for a customer to choose from. People buying weed from their black market dude usually only have one, maybe two choices and that is whatever the black market dude has at that particular time. Plus the dispensaries have other options such as edibles, oils, and paraphernalia, all in the same store, one-stop shopping.
I'm only speaking about the dispensaries on the reservation. I don't know anything about the dispensaries off the reservation.
I don't smoke weed but I know a few people that do. Plus I live next to the reservation and have some Indian friends, that's how I know about some of this stuff. On a side note, FWIW, I don't use the term Native American I call them Indians, and at least the ones that I'm around don't give a shit. They're not the snowflake kind of people.

Totally agree. I have posted many times in favor of only taxing consumption. This government doing it would just be a sleight of hand though. What rate is "fair"?
Then the very next congress would say we really need a very small income tax as well, but we will put a 2% annual cap on it.
