Maybe we should call illegal immigrants inmates and inmates illegal immigrants.

See! You've already inadvertantly adopted some of their vernacular.

We frequently refer to "illegal aliens" (as is specified in U.S. code) as "illegal immigrants."

Language matters. Aliens are aliens, whether legally residing here or after entering illegally.

Criminals are criminals. Incarcerated criminals are "inmates." If FUKH prefers, we could use "incarcerated criminals." Calling them "incarcerated individuals" is moronic. We're not incarcerating cats, dogs, hamsters, or other livestock. Ergo, they must be "individual persons." Referring to them as criminals or inmates is simply truth in advertising.
