Home defense choke?

PSA .. use LEAD for your shot .. not that copper or other stuff ..

last year i had a intruder and had to shoot him ..
the copper BB from the BB pistol did a pass thru and ricocheted off the wood entertainment center
and took out my 1 week old 24 inch Computer monitor ..

IMO i think barrel length matters more than choke at home defense usage.

If it hasn't been already said...

you should find the greatest distance you would be shooting inside your home in a defensive situation. Then take your shotty to the range and pattern it at that distance with your HD ammo and a few different chokes. Find which patterns the best and use that choke

Late to the party, but this is the correct answer.
My cylinder bore 590 with FC #00 punches one ragged hole out to about 15 yards. After that, all pellets stay in the A-zone up to about 21 yards. And if I have to take a shot beyond 21 yards. I'm probably switching to slug anyway.

I dont agree with "it wont make a difference for home defense ranges".

bullshit! it might make a difference! especially if a home intruder is 20 ft down a hall and so are my kids bedrooms or my dogs kennels. I need to know what those pellets are going to do.

Whatever you choose, take it to the range and pattern it. In my mind, I'd first want to check what I have and see if how it performs before I go down a rabbit hole of different combinations. What works in someone else's gun may perform differently in yours.

20 feet down a hall the pellets are all going to hit within an inch of the point of aim, no matter what choke you have or (legal) barrel length.

So, unless you sawed your barrel off to 6 inches the only thing you need to worry about in that scenerio is where you are *actually* aiming the gun.

Exactly what I was going to Post.

I have an "old school" Remington 48 that was in horrible condition that I got as a Teenager so back in the day, I made it into an 80's version of tacticool including a barrel shortened to an overall length of 19" with the Cutts Comp on it. (little longer IF you screwed in a Tube)
Haven't shot it in a decade so when I pulled it out from under the Bed and the Dust Bunnies had grown into Rabbits, figured I'd better test it, took it out yesterday: 2-3/4" Royal Buck (00 lead) whipped off three rapid succession shots ALL into a 55 gallon Drum at ~20 yds and while I didn't go count all the holes, they all were concentrated in a Plate sized area the center of the Drum....YEP, it works! Back on standby it goes.
