I don't think we have a thread focused on homesteading yet, and from multiple other threads I think there are enough people interested in learning more so maybe a stand alone thread is a good idea.

I think the concept is becoming much more appealing now than ever.

I'll start

I don't think you need as much land as you might think. Homesteading is really about self sufficiency. My belief is self sufficiency not only for yourself, but for community as well. It would not be that difficult for a few like minded neighbors to band together and form a community homestead of sorts where everyone does something different and everyone has access to purchase or trade goods and services that they themselves do not have.

I just bought a grape vine today and I have some lotus flowers coming. The seeds are edible and the plants go for like $70.00 each. I’m going to try growing them and selling them to make a bit of money here and there.

I started homesteading about 5 years ago. I work full time and have kids, so it is a slow progression that I am hoping in 10yrs will be complete. Every year we add to the things we do. Started with gardens, but with intent on storing everything we grow. As you can imagine its a busy time now as we are canning and dehydratong like mad. I have a small apple orchard, cherry orchard, blueberry orchard, etc. We do maple syrup, apple cider, and make wine. Added bees last year and also do honey.

Soon we will start livestock and I plan to make a small butchering room. Plans for more different gardens as well. Needless so say we are busy people.

I will say from my experience so far that homesteading is more of a community process if you ever want to be 100%. You just can'to do it all. That is why I work with the Amish when I can. Overall my goal is to be self sufficient enough to not depend on the current corporate food system. It is a tough process for sure.
