Hornady reload info

Anyone having a current Hornady reloading book, can you help? I am using .357 mag Hornady XTP 158 gr. bullets and Hodgdon H110 powder. Hodgdon states using 15.0 gr as a start but I am getting conflicting info that it is more le 13-14 gr..............can you look up and tell me what they say? This will be used in a lever action Henry. Thanks

I'd start at 14.0 and call it a day. You can always go up. You can't go down.

14 violates no maximums, is mid range on the well known conservative Hornady, and the margin of error for that round and powder is large.

And I use Power Pistol for .357.

I'd make five rounds stating at the minimum them five rounds at each increment to the max and see which load works the best in your gun.

There will always be variances in reloading data. Bullet manufacturers have the advantage of knowing the specifics of their bullet metallurgy. They can test powder-metal-in a test barrel. Power manufacturers assume different bullets might be used and publish data on worst case scenarios. An old reloader I correspond with noted that edition 1 vs edition 13 of a reloading manual generally shows that maximum powder for a load has decreased over the years. His assumption is this was done for liability purposes.

I reload primarily for practice and target. I'm lucky if my powder loads ever go beyond 80%. I get a good lifespan out of my target-range brass. I do set aside my once used brass in the event I ever want to load up some 100% loads.

Some books dedicated .357 data for rifles vs .357 handgun. Read the notes for interchangeability.

I love these henry rifles,,started w/ a plain H001 round bbl carbine....then the small game carbine .22 w/ octagon bbl and skinner peep sight. Now upping the game. I'm used to the tube loading , but it would be nice to have the receiver loading gate, but the tube is quicker(safer ?) to unload by dumping instead of chambering.....so I've read.

I think I'm gonna pick up some more reloading books to weigh against each other. I have Lee. I'm gonna get the Hornady book...........any other suggestions/favorites ?

I set up the press using the Lee book and Hodgdon info for the Hornady 158 ge. XTP....they called for oal to be 1.58 the pages above show oal at 1.59. Is the 1.58 oal gtg ?

I'm sure .01 will not matter, but I'd go with 1.58.

I have a Ruger 77/357 rifle, I shot some new 357 magnum 158 grain round nose factory new ammo at 100 yards and had it sighted in.
Then I shot some 158 grain Hornady in 38 spl, I'd have to look up the powder I used. The 38 spl hit just about 4 inchs low to the right an inch or so.

I'd play around with the 158 grain bullets and try a couple different types of powder initial you find the sweet spot.

Check out the reloading books on e bay, i bought a bunch of older books on there, there is some good reading in them.

Think about picking up the newest version of the Lyman reloading book.

I generally use the Hornady book the most, it has what guns they used to test the ammo in.

The Lee book is ok, but he slaps himself on the back to much for me and their customer service SUCKS compared to Hornady and RCBS.

I am going to get rid of all of my Lee dies.
I have been replacing them with Hornady and RCBS.

I do like the older Lee hand primer tool. And I like the Lee Universal decapper.

I like the Hornady powder measure, I bought the rifle and pistol micrometer adjustment, once you get the right drop figured out write the setting in your notes for your loads and readjust it to the setting and go. I always check a few drops to make sure it is right where it should be.

Hornady is light. Alliant online info is dangerous.
