So recently, I was watching TV with the wife and wanted to clean my revolver. I'm not allowed to use Hoppes anywhere but the basement and Eezox bothers her if I spray it near her. Then I remembered our can of Weiman stainless appliance cleaner and thought I'd give it a shot. To my surprise, it seemed to work really, really well. Most of the surface carbon wiped away instantly. The stubborn stuff by the forcing cone came off with a little more effort, but it also wiped away after a few applications.
It seems to do a much better job as a cleaner than Eezox. Using it, I even noticed that I was getting lead out of the bore with patches, something that's never happened with Eezox. It's no lubricant, so I lubed it up with Eezox later and didn't get any fouling out of the bore when I ran a couple patches of it.
Before using, I checked to make sure it didn't have any abrasives, since it's billed as a polish. It does not. The ingredients and SDS are published on their site. Maybe a chemist in here can let me know if I'm wrecking my gun with this stuff, though I didn't notice anything harmful in the ingredients. Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish Aerosol
Anyway, just thought I'd share my surprising results with a household product. I'd say it cleans nearly as well as Hoppes without the smell. Do any of you guys use any household products for gun maintenance?
