Saw a press release from local LE that said the juveniles presented pistols, and the guy drew his own and fired. Turned out their pistols were air guns. Pretty fucking simple case of FAFO, no?

Agreed. My kids would have never done this and in fact I fully believe they would have called me if others were doing this.
This is a hard one. They were armed so tough to blame the guy and in fact I fell bad for him having to shoot kids that young. Poor man’s life will never be the same.

Unfortunately 12-14 year old "children" are not the same as they were when many of us were kids.
They are hardened criminals with dozens of felonies and multiple arrests on their records.
Hell, in some 3rd world countries a 14 year old is a prime soldier.

Ask anyone that works in Juvenile Probation how bad it is and what they get away with...the whole thing is a joke, criminals know it and exploit teens to do the dirty work or take the fall knowing nothing is going to happen to them.
Keep in mind it's not the Courts or Law Enforcement that created this debacle, it was the Legislators and Governor; They make the Laws and lower the standards that the Judiciary must follow.

The use of the word "children" to describe juvenile predators committing felonies and threatening others' lives is infuriating.

My dad taught 6th grade for 51 years. He has many stories about the behavior of kids from the late 50s when he started until 2010 when he retired. He retired because of the kids behavior, but mostly due to the behavior of the parents. He once had a mother come to his classroom, during class and throw punches at him. The day previously he had escorted her 12 year old son out of his room by the kids arm. The kid was physically assaulting another student.
The woman was arrested for I believe disorderly conduct. She did connect a couple times with my dad's hands, but he didn't want her to get a felony assault, which may affect her sons future.
The funny thing is, my sister currently teaches 6th grade at a rural school a few miles from my house. She says the parents are attentive and engaged with their kids education and have no problem with teachers punishing their kids.
And THAT is one of the differences between city people and country folk.
My dad rarely had a parent call him regarding their kids. My sister gets multiple calls a week. And the grades reflect this. The tiny K-12 school my sister teaches at is in the top 5% in NYS as far as test scores....this includes private schools!!
Seriously, EVERY country kid I know are outgoing, obedient and well behaved.
City kids.....not so much.
And by city, I mean Jamestown and Fredonia NY, not exactly the gritty inner city.
Heck, my good friends 17 year old kid started a firewood business in August. He has an F-250 that he "restored" and bought a Harbor Freight log splitter to cut his wood.
He asked if he could hunt on our property this year. He showed up on opening day with 2 cords of wood as payment. I didn't ask for any payment, he's just a responsible kid.

Having kids is a HUGE responsibility. Not just financially, but also mentally.
There are plenty of people that have kids that aren't mentally capable of raising them. Sad, but true.
I'd rather have someone mentally capable of raising kids than financially capable. Generally speaking those kids will often bend over backwards early on in life to try to be better than their parents financially, while keeping that aptitude to raise another generation with money and skills with respect.

Interesting idea. I'm not a fan of charging parents for the behaviors of their children, as most kids do stupid shit at some point or another no matter how well they were raised. But at the same time, if we're charging parents of mass shooters, maybe we should look into charging parents of kids like this. I don't see a lot of difference here, really. In one case, we have a kid with a gun doing bad things. In the other, we have kids with guns doing bad things.

I find it sad that it happened, sad because those 'kids' were out on Christmas Eve/day because there probably wasn't anything at home for them, certainly not a caring and loving adult. Don't get me wrong, they messed around and they found out. The parents should be looked at because they failed those kids.
I feel bad for the guy that shot them, not only will this bother him but it can financially ruin him paying for any counselling he may need and attorneys' fee as I'm sure he will be sued. Plain and simple, sad all the way around.

Why should he feel bad? People were assaulting him. You have a right to defend yourself. The age of the perpetrator is irrelevant. It's not like you owe it to them to get beaten and mugged because they are kids. Fuck that nonsense.
I'm also not about equal force either. If someone punches you I think you should be free to shoot them. Getting punched can be lethal. You can be knocked unconscious and hit your head while falling. Not to mention if you are unconscious you are completely defenseless. Besides I like the idea that criminals would have it in the back of their minds that they might get wasted if they commit crimes. Criminals *should* be worried.
