How can i get Started.

Turning 21 in a few months. Intend to basically have my application on someones desk as quickly as possible there after. I'm down in suffolk, so barring some changes to the mentality of the permit issuers, it'll most likely just be a sportsmen. Even than, i don't think I'd consider myself ready to carry for at least a while thereafter. What can i do to try and expedite this process as quickly as possible. I have no chance in moving out of this state for at least another 2 or 3 years and i want as much training and experience under my belt if i do go somewhere that i could receive a full carry permit or even const. carry.
Also whats the process like down here and who would be ideal references?
I find it hard to accept the idea that i'm at the whim of the issuers.

in my county you can turn in your application 90 days before your 21st birthday. might want to check with yours to see if this is the case in your county.

Don't know much about permits in Suffolk but if there is a true may issue mentality I'd Suggest taking the NRA Basic Pistol class to show your interest in becoming a safe gun owner. While you can't do the live fire portion in NY you can do it in CT if you find an instructor willing to help out. Maybe take the course in CT to begin with?

Yes but make sure you tell instructor that you don't have your permit yet and will need to use his gun (or rental) to complete live fire. Classes can be found/booked www.nrainstructors.org. good luck!

No worries. BTW you can take class in NY if instructor will travel to CT for live fire portion but you need to ask. Classes actually seem to be cheaper in CT though. I took Basic Pistol in CT for my CT non resident. It was about $100 less than same class in NY IIRC.

Tell them you're under 21. PL265 provides exemption for anyone 14 - 20 to shoot pistol who is under direct supervision of NRA instructor.

I'm from Suffolk. I would suggest that you call plb and ask when you can turn in the prelim app. That's what sets up the appointment for the real app with prints. You have to be 21 by the date for the full app. You are going to need 4 references that are not family and are over 21 I believe.(again ask that when you call plb). You are also going to have to get a copy of your driving record from the DMV.(they can get it but they want you to do it b/c it's more hoops to make you jump thru) I think last I heard the full app date you get is running about 4-6 months after you hand in the prelim. Didn't think of this but true. If you can get an instructor to understand and accept this (it's in the law but not everyone understands it) you're GTG until the day you turn 21.

Figured i'd update this for anyone who has similar questions. I called the permit office and they basically said they cant touch it until i turn 21. The most id be able to do is send it in a week or two early so i can possibly get it on someones desk within that timeframe. Afaik, i should be able to take a basic pistol class in ny, but due to my location, i think i'd be better off going to connecticut or somewhere else because the only open classes doen here both explocitly say on their web page, they dont rent pistols and you must have a permit. If you guys know of anyone in lower ny that runs the basic and will rent pistols feel free to let me know so i could give then a call.

But if over 21 years old, you can't do this? The state makes more sense every day.

Yeah not really sure where the logic comes into play there. Mainly because if youve been doing some sort of competition or training from the time you were 18. Theres a kinimum of a 6 moth break to where you cant touch one.
