How easy or difficult is it to get a gun in New York State?

New York passed the SAFE Act in 2013, in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Ra-Lin Sporting Goods in Syracuse says New York state is one of the strictest states when it comes to gun legislation.

But it depends on the type of gun. For a handgun, the buyer has to pass a background check, and a permit is required, which can take between 2 to 3 months. A class must also be taken.

In some cases, though, it's much easier.

"For a long gun, which is easiest to buy -- more than a handgun -- you can actually come in, pick it out, pay for it, do the federal form and background check, and be out of the store in 20 minutes," said Ra-Lin manager David Steinberg.

Steinberg says a conceal and carry weapon approval process can take months.

Although you can get a gun in a short amount of time, selling someone a gun also comes down to common sense, he says. At Ra-Lin, if they see a person who looks unstable or intoxicated, that person will be turned away.

At the R&G, the guns were all there hanging on the wall.

Here in MoCo, I've had friends tell me they got theirs (recently) in 6 weeks. 6 WEEKS!!! That's pretty damn good. Took me 15 months from 2013-14.

Just heard Nassau expecting 3 months after finger printing but was also told fingerprint dates were now going in to April but also to expect a bit longer if one delays starting (maybe things are getting busy?). Some people in the loop confirmed 10 months optimistically (or more since the word optimistically was used) as a good guess for Suffolk. If this reporter from Spectrum News is out of the Hudson Valley (as the link suggests) a two month craddle to grave timeline is BS. Since the shop the reporter interviewed was in Syracuse, I also checked with someone in the Onondaga Sheriff's office who said it should be less than six months but certainly over three months.

Mine took 10 months almost to the day. If I want a pistol I go to the clerks office request a coupon, go shopping then return to the clerk with my receipt, they record it, hand me my new card and I'm all done.

Moved out of NY 09/16 to Fl. Don't need a PP to own a handgun but you need a permit for CC. Must be a resident 6 months to apply. Exactly 6 months after becoming a resident I applied for my CCL. Everything was done in one trip to licensing office. 7 Days later I got my permit in the mail. Never counted exactly but I can now carry in over 32 states. WOW I miss NY. NOT
