I compete in GSSF matches just about once a month during the year, I shoot plate matches at our local club, I shoot 2 different combat leagues that you work from a holster during the winter, A couple of service matches .This is how I get range time. Way back when I never thought i was good enough to compete against other people. I thought it was silly to compete just for a plaque or a ribbon .Until I started to do it and realized I am not competing against any one but myself. All of these events have made me a better shooter. A tap ,rack Bang happens automatically if I have a malfunction, by the time my brain tells me to reload I can hear the empty magazine dropping on the floor and I am already back on my sight on target. I also learned you can run (well in my case walk fast) and reload and engage targets on the move . All that being said its a great way to train, don't do it for the prizes (I have 5 free Glocks so far and trying to decide what to use my latest Glock certificate for) do it for the range time. I just brought a friend to a recent combat match, he hadn't been to one in probably 2 or 3 years and he had a malfunction, I had to yell out TAP RACK BANG ,Get moving! it wasn't natural for him. After the match he said "WOW I have to get more time in I sucked one handed and week handed shooting" I had completely forgot I am so used to shooting week handed one handed,Week handed 2 handed that its completely natural to switch back and forth . That come from shooting the matches at Master Class in Monroe NY, The matches have always been designed to teach you to be more rounded shooter. And lastly the other benefit of competing is it puts stress on you to test your skills under a stress condition. I act as a Range officer often thru GSSF and its interesting to see a person MELT down while engaging a plate rack at 11 yards, knowing if he or she was back at there home range they would clear them all with no problem, Get a little stress going and they come apart, I have to tell them , stop, relax, BREATHE!. People forget to breathe , if you not breathing your dying, these are the benefits of competitions ,get out there and compete. My nephew who lives out of state just got his CCW permit and his first gun. I am going to be working at a GSSF match out of state and will bring him and his friend thru the match hoping to introduce him to the fun and benefits of competing.
