how should i fix a old Ithaca 20ga

i have a old Ithaca 20ga single shot like below and the action is cast aluminum , the black paint they did back then is flaking off it bad .. it's from my dad's estate ..

have it cerakote ? powder coated ? .. ect .. ??

That was the first gun for hunting. Got a 7 point buck first year. Black paint does peel off.

I have several of them, that finish does suck. The main housing is made of some kind of aluminum alloy maybe have in anodized black.
I have seen them at gun shows for sale that were painted black. Looked like shit.

They are a great little single shot, I glad you picked it up from your dad's estate.

My dad has one of those as well. Nice little gun, I've dropped a lot of squirrels with it.

The M66s were made from the early 60's through late 70's (the latter being Ithaca's dying years). New England firearms made a similar version, at least until they were acquired by Marlin about 15 years ago.

The finish is lacking on all the M66 examples I have seen, Cerakoting is a good option. They are great family heirlooms to hand down and the 20 gauge especially great to use in teaching kids to shoot.

It was painted while your dad had it. Unless the firearm has some great value to you why spend a lot of money on it? Clean well (degrease), prime with an etching primer and paint...

I took the grandson shooting today, he wanted to shoot a 410 shotgun so I took one of the 410 Ithaca model 66 shotgun.like your 20 gauge.

I also took a Ithaca model 49 single-shot 22lr.

the shop in town does Duracoat .. bud says it better then Cerakote , him and his wife have AR's from them in Duracoat ..
might have to take down the ithica and drop off the parts and make it look new again ..

i tried borrowing it from dad years ago but he didn't really want me to shoot it .. he said there known to crack in the action housing ..

I have had these model 66s and the model 49s since the early 70s and never had or seen one with a cracked housing.
I have a 20 gauge model 66 with a ventlated rib that I bought at a gun show at the Montage ski lodge below Scranton around 1976. I have shot hundred of rabbits with that gun back there in New Yorkistan.i use to have two beagles for rabbit hunting and a friend had two as well.

I seen one of these ventilated rib 20 gauge model 66 listed on gun broker for $700 or $750.
When I bought mine I think I paid like $125, maybe $150.

They are great shotguns.

@HighlandLofts .. when i was a kid .. dad had this gun .. i remember it being called deer slayer .. it just sits in the rack now .. i'll have to go read the marking on it and get some pics of it ..

I had that model In 20 gauge and 12 gauge. It has the front and back sights for shooting slugs.
I sold the 20 gauge one I had years ago and last year my brother wanted the 12 gauge model.

Now that rifle is legal almost every where for deer I doubt I will ever shoot another deer with a shotgun.
About 35 years ago I did shoot a deer with a 410 Ithaca model 66. I used a rifles slug. I still have some 410 rifled slugs and buckshot up stairs.

I don't remember ever seeing one in 16 gauge, just 410, 20 and 12 gauge.

They made the 12 gauge with a long barrel, 36 Inches I think, it was called "long Tom"

Here is my Ithaca NUT GUM
my model 66 in 20 gauge with a ventilated rib. I bought it about 40 years ago and shot hundreds of rabbits with it. Only one I ever seen, i bought it at a gun show at the Montage Ski Lodge south of Scranton.

I love these Ithaca single shots. Nothing finer in my opinion. The working man's gun.

Shoot the hell out of it and enjoy it, that is what life is about.
Having this grandson out here in Washington state is a godsend, he loves the guns and the outdoors. We can be out shooting for ten -twelve hours and never once has he asked to go.home in the last two years.

Two times he said he was hungry, so Papa had some Payday candy bars in the glove box.
Tomorrow will be a full day up in the mountains, we are going to take a mountain road from Darri grown to Rockport/concrete.
Probably 40 or more miles of forest service roads, really remote. We will both be carrying handguns.
