How to move pistols out of state

Handguns are considered firearms in NY and thus illegal unless they are listed on a license then they are considered legal firearms.

So a buddy of mine is moving to NC. We have been talking about him taking his firearms and what’s the proper way to do so with his pistols.

Of course I don’t know but I thought he would have to get the license in NC and then send them to himself via FFL here and once they are down there and properly in NC, he would mail his Nassau permit along with a photocopy of his new license and a letter stating he moved.

Any suggestions?

When I moved from Erie County (Buffalo) to Charlotte, NC last year, in addition to my NY Unrestricted permit, I already had a PA and FL permit. If I hadn't had the PA permit, my FL permit would have covered me in PA, but NY's is not valid in PA. You can get a PA permit by showing your NY (Unrestricted only as I recall) if you visit a PA County Sheriff's office for $20.

Anyway, I avoided Maryland as they are problematic. From Buffalo to Charlotte you can run I90 to I79 to W. VA 19 to I77 right into Charlotte. I carried the twins (my 9mm Shields from Ubering days) while traveling and loaded the rest of them in my Odyssey. All long guns were unloaded. Other than that, I moved ammo during a separate trip.

I did NOT move guns through an FFL. According to the Erie County PPO: (1) They will not remove any handguns from my NY permit that I sell down here (even TO an FFL in NC)! The only way they will remove them is if I process a sale through an NC FFL who then sends the handgun to a NY FFL, who then sends it to an NC FFL, who then transfers it to the buyer in NC! What a pile of BS. They told me "it's not us, it's the NYSP (purple ties)! Short of doing that, they said those handguns will be on my NY permit as long as I have it. I wonder what will happen when I renew it, and don't list the guns I have sold down here? But then, I don't really give a shit either...

and (2): they also told me that any guns I buy down here (even through an FFL) CANNOT be added to my NY permit unless I go through the process in reverse...

What a clusterfuck! I WILL NOT be doing that. I guess that also means that in the future, as long as I still have my NY CCW, that I will only be bringing ones that are already on my permit to NY when I come to visit.

If you wanna come back and carry dont sell all of them.

If it was me I would sell what i wanted in NC. I would then “notify “ the ny pistol permit office including proof i sold them to a NC FFL. Then i would wash my hands of the situation. OR sell what i want in NC and not worry about it.
