I don't talk to my kids about guns. Instead I make them use them..safely..then I make them clean them. They are very responsible when it comes to guns. Something tells me this writer took the approach of "guns bad, stay away from them".

Guns aren't bad. Guns are nothing but a piece of pipe with some springs, which makes a tool.
Just like when I was growing up. My dad showed me how to safely operate a deadly tool called a chainsaw.
When I was younger, if I wanted to use the chainsaw, I'd ask permission. Otherwise I'd leave it alone.

My dad signed me up for the hunter safety course as soon as I turned 14.
I scored 100 on the test. My dad, uncles, and grandpa already taught me all that stuff by then.
As a rural farm kid, I started shooting/hunting at a very early age. My brothers and I were reminded of the 6 basic gun safety rules every now and then. Not because we had to be, it's just what my dad did.
I grew up in a house full of guns and they were all accessible to us. We knew better than to touch them without permission. That's how it went down in the 1960s - 1970s rural life.
To make this even more about me. I bought my first gun at 14 years old, a new Mossberg 500 12ga. This was in 1978 and I still have that gun, it's still mostly original, and it still gets taken out for some fun once in a while. Just thought I'd mention it.

I agree I even had my kids sitting on my knee working the press while loading and they were still in nappies.
No mystery around firearms in my home .
By the time they were 7 they could tell you all the steps of loading 222r 3006 38spl and 45acp and the powder charges as well it spun a lot of people out in this backward country I live in .

The "how to talk to your kids about guns" talk for me at age 8 was "I picked up some more .22lr if you want to go shoot".
The don't touch them without an adult talk was much earlier than that.
The funny thing is that talk never was recinded, in theory I'm *still* not allowed to touch any of the guns without an adult present, but I guess I qualify as the adult myself now....
Not sure when it was exactly, but sometime in my teenage years it became OK for me to go shooting on my own.

I was not raised around guns yet they weren't vilified in my house as a child. It wasn't until I was an adult that I became interested in them within the last 4 years or so. It's brought about an interesting division within the family between my wife's family and mine regarding the grandkids. My 2nd wife's adult children are entirely anti gun, and my children are either ok with it or pro gun. It's strange the differences when visiting grandkids on both sides. My grandkids have seen me ( papa) carrying and thier parents having guns around the house, know not to touch and don't seem phased by them at all ( which is terrific BTW). I have had lengthy discussions with my kids that they absolutely need to involve the grandkids in education around firearms and that papa will not disarm around them, and they are fine with it. My wife's family is 180° different, and it's suffocating. It's my strong belief that demystifying children to guns early and responsibly not only furthers our rights, but in the long run provides them with a necessary education regarding thier rights and responsibilities, and not providing that information stunts thier intellectual growth.
