This is actually a nationwide issue. The EPA and MOST DEC agencies are closing large area's of BLM/public land due to people boondocking and leaving all their shit behind because they're to lazy to pack it out. Its easy to pack in, its a PITA to pack out and dispose of their shit at home or other places.
This is especially true out here in the boonies. The dumbass kids from California and Oregon come to Arizona, Nevada and Utah, set up a camp for a week, party til they drop, and then pack up and go home, leaving human shit, toilet paper, diapers, cans, bottle, and packaging all over the place. Many of us full time boondockers will clean up an area that we go to and pack shit out, or if its too much shit, we call the DEC and see if we can get some help. Generally the DEC will just close the place down. THEN patrol the area to keep people out.
Why they don't patrol it while people are there is beyond me.
Technically, you're only supposed to camp on BLM land for 14 days, then you must move at least 25 miles away. But the DEC and NFS ( National Forest Service ) simply don't have the man power. The NFS has reported people living in the forest (homeless) for months, before they discovered and ordered to move. Then they generally have to force them to move AND clean up the area?
Bottom line is, there are fewer places to camp in the wilderness because of the homeless, and the 'to lazy' to pack shit out
