I guess I don't really need a permit on me

This is interesting. Yesterday I checked the county website to find out what kind of obstacle course I would have to run to amend my carry permit. I knew that the offices had been closed due to the bug, but that had been a while back. I discovered that there is a "temporary" process in place, and actually all the info and forms I needed were right there on line...I'll be damned. I can drop my stuff off at the courthouse door, or use the mail.

So, I have the downloaded checklist of documents that need to be submitted, and I'm reading down the list, and find that my wife and I must send in our permits.

Send in my permit? Naw, that had be a mistake. If I send in my permit then I don't have a permit...I mean I wouldn't have a permit in possession; this can't be right.

So I call, and yes, surrender our permits. But not to worry! They'll issue new ones, hopefully soon!

Am I missing something here?

Take a photocopy of it at the very least, along with a copy of the application and other paperwork. Not sure if that is legal, but at least you have SOMETHING in your possession to show you HAVE/HAD a permit and are in the process. Might save you SOME headache, but who the hell knows...

Yeah, I'll copy everything. And not that I'll worry about it. But you never know when something F-up'd could happen and it's just your luck that some cop with a bug up their ass ruins your day. I don't have a problem with LE folk, but I'll keep my distance. Actually, I did call Troop G and they to said don't worry....didn't really set me at ease.

God's honest truth. My wife just took off for the day with a friend. This girl had a set a set of license plates with the paint about completely peeled off. So she calls and calls DMV about replacements. DMV stopped answering the phone weeks and week ago. So she goes to our DMV in Schoharie and explains she has been trying to get the plates replaced. They tell her, yeah, don't bother calling, just fill out this form and put it in this box along with your plates, they'll send you new ones. Our friend raises hell and finally somebody finds a set of plates to swap, but it's lunch time and she has to wait, but eventually the plates get changed.

I told her all she had to do was photo copy the old plates.......

On a renewal, If they're going to take your permit they should issues a temporary one (document via email..?) like DMV does with a driver lic renewal. But hey, that would make too much sense (sarcasm.)

I would make copies of the old one and your appl before sending it in. just in case.

Onondaga county has or had the same set up. Not a chance in hell am I falling for that shit. With next to nobody at the permit office who the hell knows when you’ll get it back. Or, ooops, we’re sorry mister so and so, We seem to have misplaced your permit.

I once misplaced my permit. It was eventually found at the gun shop and mailed to me about 2 weeks later. But before that, I went to the pistol permit office and told them that I lost it. I filled out the lost form and was told that I would get a new one in the mail.

I asked the lady about an interim license now since I have nothing to produce if stopped by the police. She then asked me if I needed it for work. I told her no then she says that I don’t have to worry. I can continue to carry when I get it in the mail.

I'm a retired LEO and they make ME nervous sometimes, so I can't say I blame you with all the crap going on...

In my lifetime, I have had permits from three NY counties. All three fucked up paperwork one way or another. The worst was Schenectady, which generated a bench warrant in Suffolk. When we settled in Scary County, and of course requested a Scary County permit, they mailed me a blank permit and instructed me to get printed by the Sheriff and stick my own photo on it. That was back when the permits were paper. But can you imagine, I was given a completely blank permit?

We all know it...62 issuing authorities, 62 fiefdoms. FUAC.

You can do that but if you carry without the original permit you are in violation of the penal law. Photocopies are not permitted.

Right? Photocopies...yeesh. I got a call back from the Sheriff's office Friday, and was told don't worry about, everybody knows it's all f-ed up. The Deputy then says I'm ok during the day with a photocopy, but probably not at night when their office is closed; no way for LE to verify. WTF?

They didn't do that for me when I renewed my driver license. I had no license for two weeks. It had taken six plus weeks to get a license from the time I mailed in for renewal. They are swamped because of covid19.

Big difference between a drivers license and a pistol license. The penal law specifies that failure to have the pistol license on you while carrying said weapon is presumptive evidence that you are unlicensed, meaning you can be arrested/arraigned/jailed pending trial.

Send in a copy and retain the original on you. Destroy the old one when you get your new one in the mail.

A friend of mine was pulled over 2x in less than a year and had 2 different outcomes over his permit.
The first time he told the Trooper that he had a pistol. The Trooper asked for his permit but my friend forgot it at home or whatever. The Trooper looked up the info and let him go. No further trouble. Just told him to carry it from now on.
Then, he got pulled over by a Cattaraugus Co Sheriff. He promptly told the cop he had a handgun. Then my buddy asked the cop if he wanted to see his permit. The cop said "no, just keep your hands on the wheel".
So, 2 situations where a permit really had no bearing on the outcome.
Of course this wouldnt happen to most of us, it depends on the cop and his mood I guess.
I have never been in a situation where I needed to produce my permit......but I always have it.

Sounds like he ran into the right people. They don’t have to look anything up. They can just arrest you and let it be your problem.

He doesn’t have to he could just write them/arrest them and tow the car. But don’t expect everyone else to do the same for you.
