I HATE 45acp Brass w/SPP!

I thought that I had enough hassel in my reloading life keeping 9mm and 380acp brass separate. I don't like it when a piece of 9mm brass gets into a progressive run of 380acp, or visa versa. It boluxes up the works and slows things down due to the time to correct the error.

Well, I did some 45acp loading today. As in the past, an occasional piece of 45 brass with a small pistol primer pocket slips through. That usually winds up causing a crushed primer. Well...tonight it caused a primer detonation (the second on-press detonation I've ever had). The damn thing was loud.

I went back and sorted through my 45acp brass in my about-to-load batch and found 30 more pieces (all Blazer).

I HATE these mutant animals (45acp with small pistol primer pockets)!

I find SPP almost exclusively in Blazer brass. All to the scrap bin.

I assume your ok since your posting, and thank god! I've been fortunate not to have a primer detonation but I've certainly worried about it, especially near a full powder filler. I don't reload .45, but sometimes with 9mm or others you kind of feel like your crushing the primer in and it's always worried me one could go off. I think when (not if) I do end up reloading .45 (got to buy that 1911), then I'll be sorting the brass 3x to be sure this doesn't happen.

I hate 10MM brass with LPPs, but that's all they make.

I bought a shit load of 45acp that needs to be gone through. Haven't loaded any yet but am set up for it. I bet it made you jump a little, good thing it didn't hurt you when it went off, I guess that is why they recommend wearing safety glasses while reloading.
Sparking a primer off is some thing that could be detrimental in the situation was just right.

Speaking of PITA brass sorting, fun fact:

When you put a piece of 10MM brass into a .40 expander die (set for 40), you get a neat little mini trumpet!

And destroy the brass.

Absolutely. I've always worn eye protection when reloading. Now... I'm considering ear protection. Those primers are loud in a confined space. Since this had happened to me before, my thoughts at the time of the detonation were, "Damn loud. Crap...again? Seriously? F**k!"

I've now culled out a few hundred SPP 45ACP cases. Eventually, I'll load them with small primers. BUT, before they go to the range with me, the bases will all be marked with nice bright red Sharpie so that I can segregate them again without too much thought.

When my wife or I take 380ACP rounds (reloads or new) to the range, we always mark the bases of the rounds with a colored Sharpie marker. We do this so that when I sort brass (on the fly or after returning home), the .380 brass is easily distinguished from 9mm brass.

My biggest headache is 380 mixed in with my 9mm. My eyes aren't what they used to be so no matter how careful I am one or two usually get past sorting. So far I've always been able to catch them when I load them into the press by feel alone.

I know it's the naughty place but I found a thread about these insidious SPP 45s and the OP seems to be a genius. The insidious SPP 45 casings are almost as bad as a 9mm 1911. Also, just as a helpful tip so you don't have to keep marking your 380/9mm you can just stand them up on their bases and visually inspect. You can easily see the difference between 9x19 and 9x18 so seeing the 9x17 will stick out like a sore thumb.

Vertical height comparison is actually my main method to quickly sort large batches of combined 9mm and 380 brass. I just stand them on end and toss the short ones (380s) into one bag and the taller (9mm) ones in another bag. Marking the cases on the rounds that I bring with me to the range is still helpful for quick on-the-fly sorting. If my wife and I are both shooting, usually her with 380s and me with 9mm, the Sharpie-marked cases allows us to rapidly sort brass into different bags while still shooting at the range.

This was an eye opener for me. I'm new to reloading and have been sorting and decapping brass prior to cleaning, not yet repriming. This caused me to go through the brass and I found a number of SPP in Blazer, Federal, and Winchester mixed in. The Blazer and Winchester decapping no issues, the Federal primer hole seemed too small and I just set them aside. I hadn't gotten that far but my presumption was all 45 acp was LPP, I'm glad I saw this before having the same thing happen to me. Thanks for the heads up

I know what you mean. I have had a primer go off a couple of times. You are correct, they are very loud. Down right scare you to death.
