Depends on the set. My brother is a big trapper some of it is very swift some of it isn't.

Let me ask you this. Would you shoot an animal in the foot and leave it for 12 to 24 hours to slowly bleed out? That's what some traps do.
Im not a big fan of trapping at all but I am a fan of being able to do your own thing.
Ive seen some pretty horrible injury and suffering caused by poorly set traps set by poorly trained trappers.
The fur trappers are usually the ones I dont like. They use ineffective methods to preserve fur.
Food trappers want the animal dead instantly.
Many belive the quicker the death, the better the meat.
The less struggling the animal does the less acid that will build up but I do want my food sitting outside over night unless it below freezing
I've released animal that where in my trapping for close to 24hrs and they where fine and I caught one Bobcat twice over the last two year and if he is stupid enough to get caught this year he will not be so lucky cause they open bobcat in that area this year.
I don't use snares for that reason.
Snares in NYS require a separate license! usually pest control businesses. That is what I learned in the trapping class I took about a dozen years ago.
You should take a DEC Trapper class, As I did! They are free just like Hunter Safety classes.

not a fan of trapping. seems kind of cruel to me but to each their own. i just don't like the idea of letting something sit there in pain or immobile for a day until i come back to collect it. not to mention kill traps are pretty slow deaths if they're all in line with that one he used on the beaver.
I am not a fan, just because there are too may careless trappers. I grew up in the Woods and farm country and have found to many unattended traps to count. a bunch with dead or even near dead suffering animals. it pisses me off more than seeing a Deer running around with an arrow stuck in his ass!

I'm for trapping if the need to survive demands it. I however feel that if you can go out and hunt for sport, trapping is a coward and inhumane way to go about killing an animal unless you are nearby the trap ready to dispatch it as soon as it happens.
The animal deserves the ability to outsmart you and a quick death if all you are killing it is for sport.

No I'm not. I feel the same about taking bad shots on a deer's ass with a .308 instead of waiting on vitals for a shot.
If you are going to go around killing animals, you need to do it right.
Nobody here would put down and euthanize their own sick dog or cat in a trap in their back yard would they?

No one wants to take a bad shot on a deer, But there are a lot of bad shooters out there hunting!
And Trapping is highly regulated by DEC !
As far as putting down you're own sick dog no! But a sick feral dog or wild animal you may have too!
Trapping is mainly for fur harvesting not for food, So as not to damage the pelt! Also for varmint control ( around a farm were you may not be able to shoot) I'm surrounded by a few hundred acres of land that the owner does not let anyone hunt ( because of abuse ) but he let's a guy trap! He has taken a bunch of coyotes one was as big as a German Shepherd.
Like I posted earlier you should take the Trapping course, It will make you more informed!

I don't plan on fur harvesting so no trapping course is needed for me.
I never trapped myself, but I'm glad I took the course for the knowledge!

I trap, not going to argue with someone against it. People very seldom change a view no matter how many points you make. Don't bash it just because some people are careless or you do not know the way things work though.

Trapping is like every thing else in live, there are Pro's & Con's.
People have their own ideas about trapping and nothing will change their way of thinking. It's not as easy as people would think it is, You have to set the trap up at the exact spot the animal has to place it's paw to get caught. Some people never learn the proper way to place traps, the scent, attractor and the proper presentation to catch some of the more difficult targets.
Most trapped animals are nocturnal and most trappers check their traps early in the morning. Any unwanted animals can be released generally with out injury. I've caught several unintended animals and release them to go on their way.
A older guy out here in Washington State caught a cougar in a Bobcat set back when legholds were legal. He had to contact the State Game Dept for help releasing it. They arrived, shot the cat with a tranquilizer gun, took some samples from it, tagged it then released it unscathed by being caught by three toes.
Most water animals are caught either in conibear traps that kill the instantly or in drowning sets which is relatively fast as well.
I caught a huge pet dog once in a coyote set that I let go all by myself. He was OK through the whole process, I attached a trap tag that had my information on his collar before I let him go, I never recieved a call from the dogs owner.
