I started a worm farm

I’ve never purchased worms my entire life.(. 60 yrs. and counting) Even now when I want worms for fishing I just go out at night after a good rain fall with a low beam flashlight and pick all that I need. I can easily get a couple dozen or more in an hour .

my son and I love doing that. We actually saved some and raised them.

Worm farm is doing great and has expanded. I started off small and have grown it. I started with just a few leftover containers I had and I know have a tote about the size of a shoebox, a 5-gallon bucket and two 35-gallon rubber maid totes of them. I figure I have 3,000-4,000 worms and I just expanded to the second large tote. We’ve been grabbing some for fishing and have some to my SIL for her pet.
Each large tote has been going through a banana about every 2-3 days including the peel so that’s really increased in the past month or so. No major hiccups and no major deaths. I’m still getting a bit of a routine down since they have been growing and I’ve been changing containers fairly frequently to increase my holding capacity. Right now I’m pleased with what I have and I will hold where I’m at for sometime. I like the smaller tote and the 5-gallon bucket as back up colonies right now but I’ll likely go to a third tote some day to get me to around 6,000-8,000 worms I’d guess. If I get there I’ll start to sell some worms off at the roadside.
I have used some bedding to fertilize my gardens but not too much yet so I do t really know the impact.
If anyone has questions I’m an open book and willing to help in anyway I can.

I don’t know about where you are but I’ve noticed Around here the cost of worms is ridiculous. You should start selling them. I don’t buy worms , I go out at night with a flashlight and get my own when I need them.
I just might pick your brain for info. and start my own worm farm to sell and boost my garden boxes as an aside.

I haven’t seen the price of worms since September so they might be costly around here too.
If you have questions ask but I don’t do Canadian night crawlers because they are a PIA from what I understand. I do the European nightcrawlers and they are about twice the size of a red worm, but around half the size of a Canadian.
I can tell you it’s fairly easy and low time input. I’m happy to help in anyway I can. I started with 1 pound of worms but I’d recommend you start with two pounds of bed run worms so you have all sizes. Mine were all fishable size since I bought them for ice fishing but we had no ice. I then said I don’t want them to die so I started the compost farm.

and the single most important thing you must do, is FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT MISGENDER THEM.
