I think I “almost” have my 870 set up

Just added ( well my gun shop did - shout out for Keith at Shootz and Latters ) Picatinny section of rail. So I grabbed a cheaper Red Dot off Amazon but it had some good reviews. I haven’t had a chance to get out and shoot with it yet but with the laser Ammo cartridge its dead on at about 20ft.. that would be the absolute max for me in a home defense situation... and I really bought it more for shooting outside at longer distances.

I also added a shell carrier to the side and swapped out the stock recoil pad with a LimbSaver slip on. Eventually I want the Magpul stock and forend replacements... when they are back in stock. After that I will grab a high power light that will mount to the Magpul Mlok grooves and probably have it completed.

I have another 300+ shell day coming up with Ben over at Blue Mountain so the red dot will be given a real torture test that day and Ill see if a sub $100 red dot is capable.

The only drawback is now I have to rebuild a nice case I made myself to transport the shotgun to the range. Version 2 will be set up to transport the gun with the 18” barrel rather than breaking it down.

Case looks very well done ( professional cabinet maker and bench carpenter here). Couldn't zoom into the photo for a closer look. What materials did you use?

Thank you. Cabinet Maker and Trim carp here. It was really nothing special material wise as I dont pay myself to make myself something. Lol. It was also an experiment to see if it was practical to make a rifle case from wood.
I used Baltic Birch Plywood and dowel joinery. The foam insert was mycasebuilder.com ( I think ).

I thought about it but it makes it pretty difficult to drop a shell into the receiver during a tactical reload. I could practice coming at it underhanded I suppose so I don't hit the red dot.

Thanks, I sometimes use a wash coat of thinned shellac ( the zinsser sanding sealer stuff ) to smooth out the stain on woods prone to blotching. I also use a thicker wiping stain rather than a penetrating stain that soaks in. That seems to help a whole lot with those types of woods.

I knew I recognized that case! I was with you at Blue Mountain last month and we talked a bit about wood working. I'm gonna miss the next session over there b/c I waited too long to sign up, but I should be at the one afterwards.

I remember you talking about that laser ammo cartridge, do you have a link to share so I can do some reading on it? The Magpull brand has some pretty nice stuff, I was looking at their stuff the other evening.

Lol.. we all need to buy some NYGunforum t-shirts before the next visit. I am booked on the Aug 2nd one.

that cartridge is from laser-Ammo.com. They sell a 9mm cartridge which is the laser and then a shotgun gauge cartridge you place the 9mm into.

I am practicing my phone PRONE shotgun for the next time... that kicked my ass.

Oh yea..that prone stuff was murder, and my shoulder was a bright medley of all sorts of colors for about a week afterwards. All in all though, a good class.

I missed that one, but asked to be put on a waiting list, so maybe something will open up. As of now, I'm registered for the class in mid August, but plan to sign up for the October one as well. At least next time I'll have the right barrel .

Well you better book it... I just took one of the available October slots and I forwarded it off to a friend and told him to book also. Every week more people are buying and looking for instruction. Don't miss out again I'll be there August 2 and now October 4th. The only problem is going to be keeping the buck shot and slugs on hand for the class.


From here on, I think I'll just always keep a Defensive Shotgun class booked out in front of the one I am already scheduled for. It's just too much fun to shoot all day long and learn in the process. @OnSight Firearms Training

lol. Hey man, the class is solid, so I don't disagree. I'll get going on that. Finding the buck and slug is still a huge pain, for sure. Honestly, finding anything related to a 12GA is hard. I paid the corona tax on a barrel from ebay :-/..but at least it's the right one now.

buck and slug is hard.. I have just enough slugs but the buck I have some 00 but the rest is 1 Buckshot and that's probably all I'll be able to find for the Aug2 class.
I found an iOS app called Ammo Seeker and it searches all over the web for in stock ammo and prices. You won't always find someone willing to ship to NY because they think the Unsafe act phohibits that but not all of them are scared of #FUAC

I have some buck and slug if needed, but we are going to mostly concentrate on target loads/bird shot due to the unavailability of B & S.
