Who's fault is that? You could have taken a career path that was unionized.
Some of you haters out there that complain that they don't have a pension could have easily taken a job that offers one just like I and many here have.
My career was chosen specifically for this reason. If a pension wasn't my priority, I would have done something else that I actually like that doesn't require working nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating weekly shifts.
Countless times when openings and tests come up where I work to fill vacancies, I tell people I know about them. The replies I get are that they don't want to work nights, that they don't want to be drug tested, and that they don't want to with Saturdays. I'm 25 years old. I have to live my life. You only live once...... I don't want to travel an hour to work.
I also get the reply that they want to do what they enjoy. Well ladies and gentlemen, that's the choice you made isn't it? You could have made 80 to 120 grand with a pension but instead you would rather sell car parts at 14 bucks an hour and delivery them locally, work at a hair salon, or work at a non unionized hospital that is closer to home because that is your passion and you don't want to commute.
I will add to this as well. I will start by saying that I took my current job knowing all the "downs" of the job.
I work nearly every holiday. I usually do not have a choice. Much of my overtime is not voluntary. I get a call about a half hour before shift end telling me that I am working through the night. No choice, no refusals allowed. A pension and health care were my two biggest motivators. If those two were not present, I would have looked elsewhere. I pay a very decent amount into my own pension. It is not free. Unless I "Swap" off, I work every weekend. My days off are Monday and Tuesday. We get drug tested. We are under the watchful eye of a camera nearly every moment of everyday. I would love to have my weekends and holidays off, I would love to work a normal workday. I would love to see my family more often than I do. Yep, this job was 100% my choice; don't rip into things just because you don't have them. Government jobs are out there, lots of them. You want all this stuff, do as Will said, take the test, go through all of the background checks and the multiple interviews and improve your station in life.
