ICE and illegal immigration
CARMEL – Last month’s arrests of people living in the New York Metropolitan area by officers from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were carried out in secrecy with local laws enforcement having no idea that the sweep, Operation Cross Check, was taking place.
A total of 118 individuals were taken into custody for violating U.S. immigration laws. Of the total, 107 were convicted criminals and 55 had been issued a final order of removal and failed to comply by leaving the U.S. At least one of the arrests occurred in Putnam County since ICE failed to respond to requests detailing the number of Putnam apprehensions or where they occurred.
