MIT warns faculty and staff of ICE visits, urges cooperation: report
Massachusetts Institute of Technology has warned professors in a memo of looming campus visits by federal immigration officials, according to a report.
I know the title makes it seem like I'm not in favor of what is going on, but I absolutely am. This is LONG overdue in general. They're checking immigration status on the campus -- which, of course MIT is tipping off their students and faculty about -- as well as how a salary was arrived fit for a foreign student.
The salary component is especially interesting to me. In Information Technology fields, this is a big problem currently. Employers will frequently offer a job at a much lower rate, or the bare minimum they could get away with, to "justify" why they must hire someone via H-1B visas when no American citizen with that skillset would take it in the current market. Then, they offer the same job rate to someone who is a foreigner -- who will absolutely take it considering the company is sponsoring their visa / application for a green card. (This is a pretty standard practice in NYC today.)
It's good they're checking the salary component, because maybe some good questions will crop up, such as: "Did you try increasing the salary you offered before offering the job to a foreign worker?" Time for the gravy train to end for this crooked shit.
