Nice. That brown and smallie are huge. I have never even seen a smallie on camera. Many large mouth and they do bite here and there.Adirondacks have had ice for most of the winter. Go hit Lake Erie in the summer. It's a HUGE spot for smallies. There and the western tip of Lake Ontario and the 1000 Islands are some of the best smallmouth fisheries in the world. This past summer, the Bassmasters actually had TWO guys finish with 100+ lb bags (total for 4 days)Nice. That brown and smallie are huge. I have never even seen a smallie on camera. It’s tough since I live in western NY so that’s a far drive for me. I was going to rent the cabins at Wellsey Island but man are they expensive.

have you ice fished Oneida before? you know about the gas pockets?I’d love to ice a few walleyes. That was one of my goals for this year but I don’t know that it will happen. Good luck and post up some pictures. I’m hoping for the weekend after this one but I don’t even know that that will happen around here. We’re planning a trip to Oneida lake, but haven’t talked about when. I fear the bite will cool down by the time we get there.
Nope. Is it not safe? I’d be with my kid so dying isn’t high on my list or his, my wife would be pissed if I died.have you ice fished Oneida before? you know about the gas pockets?
Silver lake is the only one around here that’s had any reports of good ice. Some people are trying Cuba lake, but the shore ice is sketchy at best, and only about 3” of use under slush. No bueno this weekend for ice fishing. I safe ice. Maybe next weekend?? They keep raising the temperatures so who knows.
I may try silver next weekend but the issue is parking. There is no parking there to begin with and if that’s the only place around it will make it that much worse.Silver lake is the only one around here that’s had any reports of good ice. I have zero hopes of getting on the ice this year.
Glad to hear you got out and the ice was safe. It was brutally cold where we were with zero snow so I couldn’t even get the wind to stop coming through the tent. My son was freezing and my ass was frozen. I couldn’t get the feeling to come back in my ass or legs so I was out of there. The fish were not moving and not biting. I think we were a bit deep at 17’ and not much structure or weeds, but just to my left was some structure and my buddy was right on it. He saw a few fish as did my nephew but no one iced a fish. No one I talked to caught more than 1-2 fish in 4-6 hours except that one guy if he was telling the truth. I don’t have reason to doubt him but who knows.Went up to Chaumont Bay this weekend for our annual guys ice fishing weekend. To be honest we weren't sure if there was going to be safe ice but a few of the locals assured us some of the bay was gtg. found 4-6 inches of black and a few inches of white ice. Went out out Friday morning and didn't catch shit The wind was wicked and we decided to leave that spot around lunch time. Packed up and headed to the other side of the bay for the night bite. It was below zero but at least the wind had slowed down. The night bite turned on and we started slamming perch. Didn't matter water kind of of lure or bait you used, it just needed to be in the water. Bite shut off well after dark and we packed up and headed home. Got up early Saturday morning with intentions of hitting walleye. Static air temps were -25 and with wind chill it was -40. Got set up on a spot and started seeing fish chase but couldn't get one through the hole. My buddy did have one on but it shook and spit the hook. The wind was relentless all day but the bite stayed active well into the late morning early afternoon. We stopped seeing fish around 230-3pm and the bite never came back, however my brother did manage to squeeze a 35-40" Pike through the ice a little after dark. We ended up with a bucket full of perch, one of which was 1.5 lbs, and a nice fish fry dinner but the walleye remained elusive.
I had to head home early Sunday morning but the others stayed, they slayed the perch until about noon and then headed out. Not a bad weekend of fishing and I'm hoping its not the only time I get out on the hardwater this year but it aint looking good
