That's actually the name I couldn't get off the tip of my tounge.Emerald Ash Borer damage.
I'm thinking WAY too big for squirrel. The holes and marks inside definitely look like ash borer or some other grub but wouldn't surprise me if some other animal tore the bark off looking for a meal. Maybe porcupine? Squirrel? Or even Black Bear.
NoAny deer hair?
Seems like a little strange for bark to just fall off in that pattern. The ash tree in the pick looks dead. Killed by the beetle. After being dead for a period of time the bark looses the bond to the tree. It doesn't help that the beetle lives under the bark and feeds. No other visible signs of claw marks. I'd say it a safe bet that the remaining bark is loose, and easy to pull off.
Never woulda guessed. I got a couple of those redheaded monster noise boxes out there.Woodpeckers.
Ive watched them do this before.
