I've spent some time in polk county (in the lakeland area) and I enjoyed it. Its one of the few areas in florida I could live. Its not crazy touristy there, it's not on the ocean or gulf so hurricanes aren't as threatening, but it's just 30 mins to tampa if you need a reason to go to a City.
