Hey guys, so I see a lot of talk on this forum and others about people wanting to have basic medical training for a worst case scenario. I happen to work as a paramedic and I'm on the tactical medic team, we do missions with SWAT and ESU which are generally a "worst case scenario" type of thing anyway.

I just got certified to teach Tactical Combat Casualty Care, which is basically battlefield medicine adapted from lessons the military medics learned overseas since the Iraq war started. Things like bleeding control, airway management, field triage, carrying / dragging, etc...

Would anybody be interested in an informal get-together, go over some skills, IFAK setup, that sort of thing?

Hi neighbor, in Dutchess as well. I'd be interested but I have zero first aid/medical training so this may be way beyond me. Are you thinking open to all or something more advanced? At a baseline I'd like to learn how to handle something like a range accident or injury.

Tactical lifesaving is super awesome stuff and something everyone should have at least a touch of exposure to if carrying... It could save your life or someone you know if ever attacked!

@Calculon it can be whatever people want it to be. What the military learned is that uncontrolled bleeding, airway obstruction, collapsed lungs are the three biggest preventable causes of death on the battlefield. People with these conditions generally don't make it alive to the hospital for treatment, so care must be given immediately. All three are relatively simple to correct, even if you have no medical training whatsoever. This is most certainly applicable to something like a range injury, or even finding yourself involved in an active shooter situation where medical help can't reach you due to safety concerns.

I would definitely be interested in this. Took one of Fry's classes and it was AWESOME. Highly recommended for anybody that carry's a gun or spends time in the woods.

Everything they are teaching civilian medics stateside now about trauma care is based on lessons learned from military medicine, you're exactly right.

I was a volunteer emt for a local fire company after the Army. Being a rural community we have some severe MVA trauma due to dark country roads and not much else to do but drink.
I agree knowing what to do in an emergency is a must if you carry a weapon. Wish I was closer, you can always use a refresher.

Same situation, but definitely interested. I've been trying to get basic first aid/CPR training through work, but keep missing the classes due to prior commitments.

I'd be interested. I was NR-EMT-D but that was a long time ago and would find this training valuable.

If it's the video I'm thinking of, the authorities shot this dude in the street and he had a femoral artery bleed. They literally stood there and watched him bleed to death in the middle of the street. A tourniquet would have given him a shot at making it. Direct pressure would have been very difficult due to all the "meat" of the thigh and maintaining the required pressure to stop blood flow at a very large artery.

My #1 question is can this be done via a forum thread here ?? now that would be cool .... yrs ago i went thru part of the EMT coarse for first responder .. i can stick plastic down your throat or rubber up your nose .. LOL .. i'm sure lots are interested but just cant travel the distance to actual classes ..

Thanks. Can I assume a wound such as this would never really clot? That direct pressure would merely reduce bleeding until suturing?

Yes if the wound is up near the iliac crest and you can't get a tourniquet above it, then a direct pressure device like a junctional tourniquet is really the best option. But they're bulky and cumbersome to use. Not something you can toss in a pocket or a kit really.
