In wake of two mass shootings, Orange County sheriff says area stores should consider armed guards

GOSHEN – The nation was horrified when an armed 21-year-old man opened fire at a Walmart shopping center in El Paso on Saturday killing 20 people and wounded more than two dozen more.
Hours later, early Sunday morning, a gunman opened fire in downtown Dayton, Ohio, killing nine people and wounding more than a dozen. That shooter was taken down.

While police in Texas try to figure out why the gunman, who gave himself up, went on the murderous rampage, one Hudson Valley lawman thinks shopping centers should consider hiring armed guards.

Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois said that would be one way to help prevent future similar acts of violence in public places.

How about not passing laws that inhibit and discourage citizens from carrying?How about a little mutual training to develop skills of volunteers who are motivated to carry?

The government's solution to a problem is to create burocracy and throw money at it.

She works at a large store like Walmart.
One of the few stores that allow concealed carry by their workers.....as long as they have a "legal carry permit".
She insists on carrying Speer Gold Dot 38 Special +P 130gr JHP, but they are better than nothing and she shoots them well.

It’s actually not a bad load. I just looked it up. Almost 14 inches of penetration in gel compared to other loads that do only about 11 inches.

I’m all about penetration and carry ball to achieve that but if I had to carry a HP, this would be it.

Thats why she has that ammo, we found the best readily available ammo in 38 SP.
I guess I forgot the part about her having a 357 Sig, a 9mm and a 40 SW.
She handles them all well but just likes revolvers.

One of the reasons I haven't bothered to get my unrestricted is that I work in NYC so am basically disarmed at work (not counting Sabre/flashlight/knife).

Consider adding one of these to your EDC wear - Fisher Police Pro. I'm never without mine when I'm out of the house. All metal, very sturdy, doesn't look like some weird Klingon sex toy, and it's a great pen, too!

ETA: I've had mine for over 6 years, and dropped it innumerable times, dropped it in water, and generally kicked the crap out of it. The "Police Pro" logo and some of the matte finish is gone but it just keeps write on ticking (pun intended).

I think that the Orange County Sheriffs are doing the right thing. Hear me out.

1. They never said to ban concealed carriers.

2. They are just wanting to add guns to unarmed security that’s already in most places.

3. The sheriff’s that I run into (my county of Orange) are actually pro 2A. They fingerprinted me without issue and were actually glad I was applying to 3 out of state carry licenses. We talked about the states I would gain with these 3 licenses. They actually had to do the same thing before LEOSA since they actually have to get carry permits for off duty carry.

She carried daily when she first got her permit.
Then she stopped carrying to work but still carried most places.
We didnt even talk about these 2 recent shootings, I just noticed she strapped up this morning.

I'll be the first to admit. I'll never be a person who claims to be a "sheepdog". I'm not carrying a gun to fight for any of you and I'm not carrying a gun to come rescue you. I'm not a cop, I'm not military, and I'm all about self-preservation.

Is there a situation going on in my immediate vacinity that needs to be remedied? Okay, I might step in if the situation allows. Those involved will only get help from me due to their proximity to my need and desire for self preservation.

I'm not a hero, I do not want to be a hero, and I damn sure am not going to take on the responsibility of being Batman because I carry a firearm for SELF-defense. I'm also not going to be a fucking medic because I have bits and pieces of an INDIVIDUAL first aid kit (IFAK) on me. Those are for ME and my loved ones.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule such as kids, or those injured needing help after the incident, but, I don't have an overhwelming urge to say I'd come and help anyone during the incident.

So, for people asking where the concealed carriers are during these situations? They're probably doing one or two things.
1. The natural instinct of "fight or flight" kicked in and they secured themselves and their loved ones while evacuating the area. or
2. They're following their training of not drawing on a drawn and active gun.

All of this said, yes. A person carrying a firearm concealed can make the difference. We see it every day. The CDC has stated there are over 500,000 individuals who are saved annually just by drawing their guns.

A permit stating one can carry or even the act of carrying the gun doesn't make a person a hero. It means they've taken responsibility for their own safety and MAYBE those around them if the situation allows it.

Before we begin asking "But where were they?" ask yourself... How many situations have you willingly ignored because it "wasn't your problem" or even just felt you needed to get away instead?"

Armed guards may work but why not open up police ranges for citizens use with police there to oversee and provide instruction? I know many members here can out shoot many LEO's but there's a LOT of inexperienced gun owners out there that could benefit from some free "professional" help.

Not too sure about that. Orange County actually hires a lot of Armed Guard from our local Atlas Security company. All our government buildings have armed guards from Atlas running the metal detectors at those government buildings. You rarely see Deputies on the streets. They are busy in the Orange County jail. About the only time you see them is at fairs and other events like the Stewart Air show where they are augmenting Atlas Security there.
