Not everyone has financial acumen or experience to know what they needed to do. My parents also "made some bad choices" out of necessity and now my mother has to have a part-time job to help supplement her S.S. in her retirement, and that is even with lower costs of living since she is living with my sister.
If I hadn't had a friend step in and educate me on ways to reduce debt, save for "rainy days", and invest in a 401k I might have been in the same situation.

Bad choices or not, S.S. was touted as a way for someone to have a retirement even if they couldn't play the market like all the rich folk.
Instead of having that fallback this .gov is nickel-and-diming our senior citizens out of the money they contributed (ie: forced to pay). They should have been taking the money they extorted and invested it in a way that the retiree would have a legitimate source of income when they retired. But no...they turned it into the largest .gov approved pyramid scheme in existence. I doubt I'll ever see any of the hundreds of thousands of dollars they stole from me.

All while they are aiding and abetting criminal activity with OUR money!

Thats what I was thinking. Zero planning at all. Compound that with she was either very low paid, retired at 64 or both to only be taking $1100. Its not like its a surprise how much you are going to get from social security

Life sometimes throws curveballs at people. I had to drain my 401K to pay for a lawyer, private investigator and forensic psychologist when I went for custody of my son. It damn near drove me into bankruptcy but I would do it all over again. I won, and it was worth every penny. So now I am living on SS of just over $2k a month, a small pension and work to PT jobs to make ends meet. That's the way things sometimes go.

Inflation is definitely affecting many retirees, and the middle class as well. The wealthy will bitch and moan about inflation, but they aren't really hurting. And the poor, same thing... they'll vote dem and keep getting tax payer provided free shit handed to them regardless of inflation.

I rendered unto Ceaser since I was of working age. I retired at 65 (now 73) and am living on SS and a so so pension. I don't have a 401k or any real investments, I never learned about retirement planning... my bad for being/staying ignorant of such things. Prior to retirement I made "ok" $$ but never made big $$. With the exception of dumping a LOT of $$ into go-fast boating prior to retirement, I lived within or below my means. Fortunately my old (1850s) house is paid for, 2016 Chebby Z71 and 2015 Indian moto are paid for. My old house needs lots of TLC, bit of a $$ pit
Although I'm pretty much dept free, I definitely feel the inflation pinch, income is just a tic or so above break even, so far. I have no problem with .gov $helping$ our citizens who are deserving and need the help. But it beyond pisses me off to see the illegal alien border invaders get all the free shit they get, along with aid to our enemy and shithole countries. .gov is a combination of greed, traitorous, and has its head deeply intrenched up its own ass.

Agreed. My wife and I make a good buck but things have become tight. Of course part of that is because we’re helping my oldest with college and I’m paying for my college. I should be done in February and be able to start teaching then and things will get better but I shouldn’t need to make $200,000 to make ends meet. We’re not frivolous spenders either. I could cut back on a few things but we rarely go out to eat and do t take extravagant vacations. I have one car payment and a mortgage and that’s all. Car payment will be gone within one year.

But for many it *is* a surprise how far that money won't go anymore.

But now that it's $300, and everythign else is way up too things are not working so well.

Not a fair statement. I am a CPA on long island gold coast. Needless to say I made decent money and my wife a critical care nurse working in a neonatal unit. Buy a house get some nice cars very affordable and Very middle-class. Then 2ndbaby comes along, a month in intensive care. I lost a whole tax season, lost 1/2 my income that year and lost 30k of permanent income from people that didn't come back. For the next 10 years my wife couldn't work and my out of pocket medical was 40k between premiums and co pays. Almost lost our house.

Its taken years to get back on track, payoff debt and build a nest egg. I was 44 when my daughter was born and only started savings at 55. I am now 65 and planning to slow down, but not in NY. Covid made most of my clients remote so I will be going south soon, give up my monthly business clients and keep all tax clients. Make 1/4 of my income, work 4 months and live like a king.

My son recently bought the exact house we would get in Huntsville. Not counting his mortgage since I won't have one, his total house expenses are $800/month. (Insurance, utilities, lawn care etc.) My taxes alone here are 1200/month. We could live on social security if we were very very frugal in Alabama. Tennessee is even cheaper to live and buy a house but we want to be near our son.

My point to disclosing all this is that everyone's situation is different. And with making big decisions, like moving, you can work things out.

Ps would move anyway given NY politics but economically its the only way I can semi retire.

We are "workampers". Right now, in our current situation, we are basically living for free. We get a free campsite with full hook-ups { free 50A, water and sewer } free propane, free fire wood, and free bagged ice. We have 215 sites, and a 5 acre dog park.
We work 4 days on, three days off, for a total of 32 hours/week. But what we do is basically a joke. One couple will drive around on golf carts and do site checks ( clean the camp site, clean the fire pit, if the previous campers left garbage or unburned firewood in it and check the power pedestal--- 2 to 3 minutes per site ) We get a camp site ready for the next camper/RV. One couple will pick up garbage ( most campgrounds make YOU take your own garbage to the dumpster. Here we pick it up for you. ) We mow the lawn ( we have "Country Clipper" zero turn riding mowers with Joy stick control, these things are a blast to drive around ) I also maintain the lawn mowers and back pack blowers. Im also the "go to" plumber and electrician. We also have a M59 Kubota tractor/ front loader I get to drive around. We can take any equipment any time we want. No problem
Our Bosses are unbelievably laid back. last week while mowing I accidentally ran over a water supply post for a campsite. I had a mini-geyser. The one I ran over, is a supply for 40 camp sites, I called the boss and he drover to see what I did, I figured I was deep shit. He looked at the geyser and said "yep, this is what happens when you slam into one of these things, don't worry about it, this shit happens all the time. You go get a couple shovels from the maintenance barn, I'll go shut off the well, and tell the office the water will be off for a couple hours" within 10 minutes we had, me and three other workampers digging a hole to find the break. it was 3' under ground. Two others were gathering parts. We had the water back on within 2 hours. The boss said " you ain't the first to do this, you certainly aren't going to be the last, LOL. BTW, there are 8 more of these water hydrants, try not to run them all over, in one day, LOL" and he walked away.
We work 9am to 5pm with a one lunch. Everyday, right about 4-4:30ish we all meet at the maintenance barn and have a "OSHA safety meeting" which involves beer ~~~or your favorite beverage. They have a big cooler in the barn, (we also get free bottled water, Gatorade, and such), that we can put whatever you want to drink in there for our the safety meeting, I usually have a bottle of Capt'n Morgan and a 6 pack of ginger ale in the cooler ( for some reason no one likes ginger ale but me )
Last Sunday the boss called and said "Hey, we are going tubing with a couple other workampers, you guy want to go" Hell yes. We went for a 2 hour tube down a lazy ass creek, the boss rented a "cooler tube" so we could take beer and snacks with us. Next Sunday we are doing the same thing but with kayaks, down a different river.
For us, so far retirement is a blast. there are six other couples doing this. We get Friday-Sunday off.
Oh ya, one of our "jobs" is to stop and talk to the guests. We have talked to people with tent campers, to 2$ million busses. We have only run into a couple that were complete jerks.

In October, we all head for parts unknown or for us, Arizona for the winter. We'll be back here in late April for one more season, I think in 2026, we may try an Alaska trip. we'll see how it goes.

In a few years, I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I want to sell my NY property and GTFO of NYS. I want to buy some land, build a pole barn with electric service, and have a camper. Down south obviously. No house (the barn and the camper will be the house -- put the camper in the barn for protection). Obviously get a new job, but something more laid back as I get older, but keep my mind busy. Also cut back on everything I got service-wise. Moving will cut down on taxes and insurance for sure too.

Many were overpaid teachers or gov't employees........many 2 in household.....
Expensive cars, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus proliferate.......... move up homes, property taxes, unexpected cancer, and loses at Casinos. Most People lived paycheck to paycheck

Many are broke now, due to lifestyle.

Millenials cannot afford homes or food due to inflation..........University tuition/loans are high because of criminal activity raising U salaries and costs..............we are now due to a total reset...........like 1929.

we are considering the same thing. We want to buy a plot of land down south, or more correctly, south west desert area. Install a cement pad that is 40' x 80' x 6" with re-bar, with a sewer/leech field/septic system 100A service with potable water and a steel/metal pole barn that we can put the coach in when the weather gets nasty.
Then we can simply come or go as we please. If we dig a well, then we can just turn the power off and drive away on another adventure

Around 8 years ago I contracted with my regular tree service to do some work on the property. It cost me about $1000.
This past late winter I contracted with them again, but now that same service cost $3500.
