I know it won't be popular to say, but I am generally of the opinion that the economy under one president is more a reflection of the incidents and actions in the previous term, whether that be the sitting president or a predecessor. Essentially, what I'm saying is that a policy's impact is not immediately apparent - it takes years for economic policies to yield fruit, in either direction.

In other words, economics on the scale of a country is a game of delayed gratification.

I know, I know Joe Biden sucks, and I agree... but hear me out.

We had the great recession under Obama, but it actually started when GWB was still in office - heck, the first bailout was signed by GWB before Obama even took office. Obama's first term, and a good portion of his second term, was dominated by getting through the great recession. But things were definitely on the upswing in the last half of his second term.

That led us to Trump, who inherited an economy that was ready to rocket. And oh boy did it ever - arguably, too much. We were running low interest rates and yearly budget deficits in the boomiest of boom times - precisely the opposite of what we should have been doing. But, then COVID hit. In an attempt to keep the economy alive, interest rates went all the way down to zero, and even into negative territory for a bit. Stimulus checks went out to citizens. And, we started printing money like crazy. All of these things have very predictable outcomes: in the near term, abundance. In the long term, inflation.

Biden comes into office and largely continues many of the same COVID policies Trump started: stimulus, low interest rates, printing money. Amazingly, this did work - we avoided another recession, somehow. But now we've been experiencing the downside of that: inflation. The response to inflation is to raise interest rates, which has the effect of cooling the economy through a myriad of different channels. Eventually, we can ease down the interest rates, and the economy will start to heat up again.

So, based on this theory, my prediction: barring some disruptive event like COVID or WW3, regardless of who wins the election, the economy will be cool for the first year or two, then will start cooking with gas.

We do have a tendency to blame/credit all sorts of things to the president that he really has little to no control over. We also have a tendency to forget that very few things exist in a vacuum. A president has minimal control over gas prices, and gas prices are impacted by many, many factors.

That said, yes, gas prices being just under $4/gal during Obama's term can, at least in part, probably be attributed to Bush. It's a pretty well-established fact that starting a war in the Middle East will cause gas prices to rise. And what did Bush do? Start a war in the Middle East, which carried over into Obama's presidency.

Gas prices being lower during Trump's term can likely in part be attributed to Obama. The Iraq war officially ended in 2011, and the Middle East was relatively stable for a period of time after that. A stable Middle East lends to reduced oil and gas prices. But the biggest contributor to reduced gas prices is likely the development of horizontal drilling and hydrofracking, which opened up a ton of oil reserves and restored the US to its status as a top oil producer. The markets were flooded with oil, which drove down prices.

We're back at $4/gal or so now. One of the causes is almost certainly inflation, which was in part triggered by the massive printing of money under both Trump and Biden terms. Another is OPEC lowering production rates to raise prices, which occurred under both presidents as well.

If you remove the political emotion from the discussion and simply look at the driving causes of economic changes and their associated timelines, you will see that my theory holds quite a bit of water. The economics of today came about in large part due to the policies of yesterday. This should not really be a shocking statement, that's how things work in general, and large systems - such as the economics of a country - don't rapidly shift direction without major and immediate disruptions. Presidential policy is rarely an immediate disruption.

Don't believe me? Look at the timelines the government puts out. When a proposal to modify social security or medicare or whatever comes out, they don't talk about what it will cost/save us that year... they talk about the costs/savings that may be realized over the next decade... obviously extending well past the current president's tenure, and possibly as far as two or three presidents down the line. The reality is that we have people with 4-year jobs making 10- and 20-year decisions.

The president doesn't have direct control over a lot of that stuff, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a lot of influence.

As you say, stability in the middle east is the best way to keep gas prices down. A president who can do that (as Trump was doing) will keep them low. A president that makes the world wonder who is even in charge (as Biden is doing) just invites chaos and uncertainty, which in turn causes anxiety and higher prices.

Inflation will go bat-shit, interest on fUSA.Gov bonds and Treasuries will go up, and sales of said fUSA.Gov "debt" , which are already in the tank, will almost cease while countries that own them, like China, will continue selling them at a loss and bagging more physical gold bullion.

And then there's the matter of the fUSA "dollar" (petrodollar) auguring in. IMHO, it won't take as long as some think for the fUSA dollar to become so much confetti.
