Even surplus or reloads at .50 cents a round would add up to hundreds if not thousands of dollars every time you hosed something down....'course, if you've got the money for the Guns, you can likely afford the ammunition as well.
The machinegunners at Knob Creek did so entirely at their own expense, and expensive it was!

It is when compared to the full size one in 20mm.
The M61 Vulcan 20mm was the original.
It was downsized into the 7.62mm "mini" gun in the same way the 7.62mm M14 was downsized into the 5.56mm mini-14.
And the 7.62mm M134 was itself downsized into the 5.56mm XM 214 micro gun.
So it went
20mm M61 Vulcan original
7.62mm M134 minigun
5.56mm XM214 microgun.
