yet the media is crying the blues about getting rid of the electoral college, and how hitlery won the popular vote. So far she has about a 200k lead out of 120 million voters, and thats likely to shrink once all votes are counted. Thats about 1/10 of 1%, or .1%, talk about close.
ill admit, i have a much better understanding of the electoral college and why it is in place after this election. its a bit of a check and balance against the mob. precisely why we are a constitutional republic where the rights of the 49% are protected against the 51%. a true democracy is like mob rule where majority wins regardless of pre established rights/rules, etc...
When I was in high school, I could not understand the wisdom of the electoral college. I did not well understand the term, "Tyranny of the Majority." Now I do.
The electoral college is in place for several reasons. The first thing to remember is that we are a nation of states. After the articles of confederation, when Madison and Hamilton (and others) were pushing for a stronger federal government and a constitutional convention, there was great reluctance of the smaller states (nations) to be governed by afar, as they were with Parliament in England.
There would have been no great compromise and no new constitution without assurances in that compromise that the little states (Rhode Island, Delaware, ...) would have a voice in the new federal government. Thus the electoral college and in general the ability of the states themselves to determine their own elections.
It is a shame that so few today are taught or understand how the countries founders ended up with the constitution (and bill of rights).
