Interesting thing I saw today, apparently someone made a nuclear fallout/explosion calculator with Google Maps. It has multiple size warheads (Fat Man, Little Boy, improvised terrorist dirty bombs, etc) and many options for you to see how you or your city would fare if it was hit by a warhead or if a terrorist detonated some little bomb.

I found that up here in Rochester, under "normal" circumstances, I'd be ok, since I live a little outside of the city. If anything bigger hit, I'd be toast, lol. It'd take a 300kt Minuteman III to reach me. The odds of that happening are null, and I'd doubt that a missile that size would get aimed at Rochester anyways, but it's interesting to theorize.

At any rate, I'd be getting the fuck out of dodge if even a sizeable terrorist nuclear option was exploded nearby.

One tsar boma and NYC is done, with fallout finishing long island as well. Even the 9 MT from the Titan II will singularly finish the ability of any major city to support life. The entirety of Rochester taken out with thermal burns including all suburbs if one of those 9 MTs goes off.

This is also why I don't spend any time at all preparing for a nuclear war. If one happens we are all unequivocally @&#(ed.

I have to admit, I played with this tool a lot more than I think I should have, lol. It's pretty in-depth, the casualties and blast/fallout radius and crater is pretty impressive to think about

The fallout from one of those crude terrorist explosions covers the entire length of long island from the lower Manhattan region alone. The after effect estimates are modest. The radiation levels from fukushima covering parts of california's beaches today are extremely hazardous.

I'd like to see a small yield device take out the square roughly from Mt Read east to 590 and 104 south to Westfall.

Probably pretty safe in Rochester. Since the progressives have forced out all the high tech company's, Rochester has nothing worth blowing up. forty years ago would have been a different scenario entirely.

Anything below 5mt air detonated over albany and I'll survive the initial blast at least lol. Anything more than that and I'm lookin at a problem.

I think I'm probably ok with a 300-500kt or less airburst over buffalo.

Uggh I need to move farther into the country

Even if I survive the initial blasts were all downwind (depending on the net stream that time) of the missle fields in the plains that will be saturated in ground bursts. We will more likely than not be spending of a massive radioactive fallout plume.

I tried the largest with air burst on the two closest targets (Stewart ANG and Poughkeepsie) and I would fair well from the blast. It is the fallout from places to my west/north west that would suck. One thing that is clear on every scenario i ran is NYC and LI are FUBAR

I think China only has 300-350 warheads. They might be a lot more selective hitting high profile targets of strategic importance.

Russia still has thousands. If we get into a full scale nuclear war with Russia our country would be saturated. Every population center, military base. Important infrastructure, ports, power plants. Long runways 8000+ ft, etc... They would have lots to target

Griffiss is now HQ for the Eastern Air Defense Sector. They are a critical asset to NORAD's strategic air defense mission. They would definitely be on my list.

That's what I'm worried about, honestly. Not that it will happen, but that if it does happen, it's gonna happen like that. I'd rather have time to get out of Dodge, have 1 hit and give me time to go, rather than have a bunch launched and hit, then every road gets crapped up w/ people trying to get out. If 1 hit Rochester, that gives me time. If 3-5 hit Rochester because of the city, the airport, Kodak, whatever else, that'll mess up my plans just a little bit. Most of my escape plans involve main roads

Think about it, in an all out nuclear war us and the Russians each have thousands of available warheads. That's a lot of primary, secondary and tertiary targets getting hit.

Figure the SLBM will go for the highest priority, followed by Long range ICBMs going for secondary and bombers going for the tertiary. Included in any nuclear exchange warplanes are setting off multiple EMPs over the enemy country.

In a full scale exchange just kids it good bye. Your probably better off being near a target.

Now in a war with China where you may only have to worry about 200-300 warheads you have a chance....
