Is it legal to shoot off a boat?

What are the laws as far as shooting from a boat in NY? Target shooting, not hunting.

I was thinking of a floating target and some pistol practice. Do I really need to go 3 miles offshore to do this or can I do so in the coastal waters of NYS?

Makes me wonder how many MOA a 16" naval gun is capable of. 20 miles is 32,500 yards. 1 MOA at 1000 yards is 10", so 32.5 x 10" = 325" right? 325" is 27 feet. Holy crap, moving target, pitching deck. How the hell did a battleship ever sink another one?

They must be pretty accurate. They fired support, probably for the Jarheads, from off the coast of VN. Sounds like a train going over, glad they didn't have any short rounds, like shooting a two thousand pound bomb.

Actually 20 miles = 35,200 yards. 352" = 29.3 feet. They hit targets by having soldiers who can perform basic math.
I would think battleships didn't fire on each other unless they had line of sight, which is guess wasn't 20 miles. Someone on here has to know.

IIRC from my hunting course, the motor must not be running.

I remember being taught that shooting rifles and handguns over water was dangerous because the round could skip off the water the way you would skip a stone on a pond and could travel errantly over great distances. Waterfowl are regularly hunted from boats using shotguns.

As for naval gunfire: Many moons ago, watching a history show about a naval battle one night in the firehouse, an older FF who had been Army Infantry Radioman in Vietnam said his unit was in a bad way one firefight and called for artillery or aircraft support. Things got pretty desperate because none of the usual forces were available to help. He figured the good guys were going to get overun. He said a voice came up on the radio that sounded very far away, like it was transmitting across the universe and asking for his 24 digit Grid Coordinate, 12 digits getting you to within a few yards of your position. The voice was from a battleship offshore that was about to engage with it's 16 inch guns. Last instuction he got from the ship was to keep his head down. Some guys saw the shells coming in and said they looked like volkswagons coming through the air. The earth moved with every detonation and nobody in his unit could hear for a few days afterward. There was not much left of the enemy.

One thing to keep in mind when shooting at floating targets is ricochet off the water, unless you're shooting steel plates. Remember you're responsible for every bullet that leaves the muzzle.
