Is My Rifle Doomed?

Just bought a new savage. I removed the cheesy no name scope rail and banner scope as I plan to replace it seekims rings, a seekims or tps base, and a weaver grand slam tactical...


I find that one of the screw is drilled tilted towards the muzzle...


My friend into machining says as long as the other 3 are good and I use quality base, he thinks I should be okay.


What do you guys think?


I'm still a little mad. How come my tc compass is straight at $200, but this savage at $500 Is fubar...grinds my gears. Also upsetting because I have a model 11 heavy barrel that is perfection.

Send it back...from my experience, they will treat you right. I had bought a brand new 7mm mag. and it 's front sight was not at 0* on the barrel. They fixed it and had it back to me in a few weeks. Granted...it sucks that they let shit like this out of the factory, but I went for affordability when I bought.

Don't blame you for being disappointed. Hassle to return, shipping costs...but I'd want it right. You're not alone. Bought a Rem 700 ADL Synthetic awhile back, went to remove stock and...forward stock screw was loose, not even finger tight. Magazine box retainer tab screw was installed crooked, and they put the stock on anyway. Fortunately, was able to tap hole and use die on screw myself. I want my rifles RIGHT.

Savage will take care of it. They took care of my rifle without an issue. Definitely a good experience overall.

Its off a bit, and I'm sure Savage would take care of it. But if it were mine, I think I'd snug up the screws on the new rail and leave it at that...especially if the rifle shoots well. Unless accuracy was effected, I'd live with it.

Something else to consider - the repair for this would be to overdrill the hole and tap for the next size screw that will fit. Since they know you won't be happy with that, they'll likely just replace the rifle. That means you're on the hook for a transfer at your FFL.

Thanks everyone. I sent savage a request. I guess I'll see what they say monday. If this will cost me more to ship and repair or replace, I may try to mount a new base and see if the other holes are true enough to keep the adjustments on a mil dot scope within a reasonable range.

Likely shouldn't be too much of an issue. Savage will have you ship it to them with a description of the problem. You'll have to call them if you want updates though.

Sort of making me wish I had bought a howa 1500 heavy barrel instead. That was one of the options I was considering.

I'm surprised it made it out of the factory like that, WTH ever happened to quality control. generally speaking, that is something that is done by machine. the only way that could happen is if the assembly was mounted in the jig wrong and it would be fairly obvious ( I would think) I use to work at a screw machine shop (Ness Automatic Screw Machine) that made high precision things like Remington Firing pins, they had to be .001 +/- end to end and the steel gas rings for the 870 and 1100 shotgun. Every single part was QC checked out the butt and put through a comparator.

Not only did the dept that does the machining, tapping, etc miss it, but whoever mounted the scope apparently was like...eh, close enough.


Update: Their facebook team is really responsive. They are going to check the status of my request. If you have an issue, that seems to be the fastest way to get ahold of them.
