Pretty interesting. My state senator Antonacci sent out a survey through the NYS Senate website which asked this question. Seems like he’s gauging it’s popularity in his district.
Perhaps at least some of our reps are open to the idea.
Really I can’t see a feasible reason why not, other than downstate enjoying our subjugation to their will.

Nobody is saying the upstate reps aren't for the split. The problem is the number of upstate reps vs the number of downstate reps. NYC is the proverbial tail that wags the dog.

By all means, cut them off. Alternatively to that, put an electoral college system in place for state offices. Cuomo would never see another term and the late cities lock on state government may get broken.

Even being realistic about upstate vs downstate, if NYC magically sank into the ocean instantly the remainder of NY would be a slightly conservative swing state. Not even convinced upstate alone would have enough votes.

I think you would also need approval of the federal government. Let's face it they wouldn't be on board with this. They would go from 2 solid socialist in the senate to 2 socialist and 2 conservative. It would be a net loss federally for the powers that be.

I'd also be OK with moving the state line west a little more and making it run along the Hudson. Then we could easily carve out Albany and give it to Massachusetts
