Twitter CEO defends Trump ban, warns of dangerous precedent

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defended his company’s ban of President Donald Trump in a philosophical Twitter thread that is his first public statement on the subject.

There is something in this article I find particularly interesting. A point which can be used as a knife in the side of big tech.

Dorsey declined to criticize his Big Tech counterparts directly, even noting that “this moment in time might call for this dynamic.” Over the long term, however, he suggested that aggressive and domineering behavior could threaten the “noble purpose and ideals” of the open internet by entrenching the power of a few organizations over a commons that should be accessible to everyone.

Distributed, uncontrolled, social media. That's the point which now has to be hammered home. If he's truly for open internet, push him to support a distributed solution over something like Tor via onion addresses or something. Something that couldn't be easily shut down.

If he's not willing to fund it, and support it, then his words will ring hollow.

After what we've seen recently with Parlez and Gab
what we need is a fully peer to peer social media infrastructure built like bit torrent that can be used with TOR for full anonymity.

It should have the capability of hosting a forum like this, and something like twitter, maybe some of the others too.

It's not indestructible, but it would take a lot more effort to shut down than just Amazon turning off your VMs.

I wonder if Parlez has the resources to rebuild it self in a server less distributed model ?

The software is the easy part for something like that, it's the user base that's hard, and they've got one.

I've never really hosted anything in .onion space, but it may come with challenges of it's own. Since the infrastructure isn't widely used, a lot of provisioning tools likely don't work for it -- adding a layer of complexity / homebrew to provisioning. Tooling like Terraform / Serverless / Cloudformation doesn't really exist in that space.

Also you have to ask, does configuration management (Ansible, Saltstack, Chef/Puppet) even have the capability to connect to onion addresses? Probably, if they resolve, I'd assume you could still SSH normally. There may be other challenges or even connection flags that need to be set that are unsupported when on .onion

That isn't even talking about the software moving over, and what code has to be updated that wasn't tied to DNS. If they were using AWS, they may need new drivers for connecting to MySQL vs aurora or whatever they were using in AWS.

So, as you can see, there are unanswered questions. Haven't even touched on all of the networking ( subnetting / ACLs / network access) differences.
