ALBANY – Following the latest deadly mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, and Wednesday’s standoff in Philadelphia, Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) is introducing legislation in Albany that would ban the use of bulletproof vests by civilians.
Right now, law enforcement officers and a limited number of professions including licensed security guard or licensed armored car driver, may wear vests.
“Currently the law prohibits wearing the bulletproof vests if you are committing a violent felony and you have a firearm, but if you don’t have a firearm and you are wearing a bulletproof vest to protect yourself and you are committing a crime, this rule would not apply,” the assemblyman said. “So, I want to expand it to apply to apply to all types of crimes whether a felony or misdemeanor and whether or not you have a gun because the bulletproof vests used by criminals to embolden themselves to take risks.”
