Jim Corbett was born and grew up in pre-World War I and II British-held colonial India, and became intimately familiar with the jungle and it's native wildlife. Due to his outstanding hunting abilities, he was recruited numerous times to kill documented 'man-eating' tigers and leopards by various local governments, often traveling alone and on foot from village to village in what was then through wild almost uninhabited jungle on very dicey foot paths. Corbett must have been in incredible physical condition, and always very keenly aware of his surroundings. He hunted what are arguably the most dangerous animals on earth, on foot, one on one, 99.99% of the time completely alone (he sometimes brought his little spaniel dog along), carrying one rifle, and some spare cartridges, entering the jungle and hunting for usually an entire day at a time. In my opinion, he had some pretty big brass balls. He seems to have had an extraordinary sixth sense when an area he was about to enter held danger, and he also had a quality every successful hunter needs, extraordinary patience. He details his hunts, and hunting tips (always watch the wind), in his books, which make for fascinating reading. His favorite rifle was a British made double, chambered for .450/400 3" Nitro Express. We can safely assume the cartridge provided instant stopping power on the big cats, as he died from natural causes (heart attack) at about the age of 80. I am in awe of this man's courage and hunting ability.
