For all his bad-assery, Mattis never seemed to unfuck the Obola use of .MIL as a social experiment - trannies (presence & paying for it), standards reduction in units such as the Rangers, SpecOps to "accommodate" women, the Navy becoming a floating demolition derby, etc.

He did appear to "unfuck" the US Army dress uniform....

I highly recommend the book "The Absent Superpower" by the same author Peter Zeihan. It is an absolutely fascinating (and in some ways worrying) look at the trends that will shape the world over the next 20-30 years. Short version: the US will have its ups and downs but will generally survive and prosper. Many areas of the world will be much worse off. He predicts 3 wars with disastrous impacts on oil and free trade:

1) Russia vs. Ukraine/Poland/Germany/Baltic nations + scandinavian nations
2) Iran vs. Saudi Arabia
3) China vs. Japan

#1 and #2 will be for security reasons. #3 will be due to the first two wars, as Japan and China fight it out for the limited oil supplies available as a result of the first two wars.

Since the US became self-sufficient in terms of energy in 2018 (we pump as much oil as we need for our economy thanks to fracking) we no longer care about middle east oil - or the middle east for that matter. That leaves the rest of the world to fight amongst themselves. Our withdrawal from syria is a first step. Nations that depend on freedom of the seas need to rethink their military strategies. For example, Japan is now building an aircraft carrier. Why on earth would they start now? Perhaps they see what is coming.

That's what I would think. The author believes America is sick of overseas military adventures and won't agree with using troops. He thinks we will sell weapons/ammo and supply intelligence. In all honesty I think that is one of the weaker points in his book. But he clearly has thought about it a lot more than me. I think Afghanistan and Iraq have soured this country on any future military conflicts. Ukraine doesn't represent a vital national interest. I personally don't see how we can stay out of it if it becomes a conflict with our Nato allies. But relations between us and the europeans have been a bit frosty recently.

I think that’s really interesting. I’m no foreign policy wonk but if you look at some of the big wars we were successful in we were isolationist before them and came in late to clean up. WWI and WWII were great examples. Other wars, like Vietnam for example, we got involved early on after the French copped out and it exhausted us quick.
I think world relations are fracturing and our military is the mortar that holds the bricks together. However this is exhausting us, it is expensive
I’m becoming more of the opinion we should pull back to our shores, lick our wounds, build up resources and infrastructure, and let the world duke it out. Classic divide and conquer, let them exhaust themselves and we come in later and clean up, restore order. Likely more cost effective than our current adventurism.
The tl;dr I agree with trump and think Mattis probably wanted to continue our current neocon interventionism.
