I finally got the chance to get to my first Onsight Firearms Training course (Welcome to Onsight Firearms Training, LLC). I attended the Defensive Shotgun course taught by Ben and Scott at Blue Mountain on 4/23/17.
The course was attended by 12 students with varied levels of experience ranging from those who were holding a gun for the very first time to those who were seasoned shooters. Ben quickly assessed who the most inexperienced shooters were and spent extra time with them during the drills. I was very thankful for that since one of the first-time-with-a-gun students was immediately to my right. Ben made sure that the student was safe on the firing line and got her shooting right along with everyone else.
We started with safety drills and moved on to: Shooting shot, combat reloading, engaging alternating targets (center, right, left), shooting from kneeling (one and two knees), shooting buckshot, accurately shooting slugs from a kneeling position at 20 yards, and even shooting one handed after a combat single-round reload. Overall, it was a chance to practice a lot of things that I can't do at a regular range session.
I hadn't picked up my shotgun in years and I'd never taken a course with it. So, I really needed this course.
I'll certainly be taking more courses with OFT. Heck, if my schedule allowed me I'd be at a course with them every weekend. For now, I'll have to settle for about one course a month.
