Soccer mom or Gracie?
Somehow, I get the feeling that you already have plenty of, moves!Self Defense Classes | Fitness Workouts | Krav Maga New York
This is the place in my town. It really is brutal, and intended to deal with life threatening attacks, often against armed attackers.
Everyone starts somewhere, all the more reason to train and overcome what you feel are your shortcomings. Any MMA training is good too, and those places are everywhere now.Interested, but nothing quite near me. Would have to drive an hour+.
That, and I'm terribly uncoordinated and middle aged, and I'm not sure how much I want to embarrass myself
I have lower back problems .. I felt that it could cause surgery for me down the line ... I went to one class to observe ... It was interesting that they said if one was a felon they would reject teaching you. .... It was a small class 15 people max with several guards from the Monroe county jail attending.
The teacher and how you learn is more important then the style. Arts like Krav Maga are great no bs go for the throat kinda martial art, i love it. A lot of schools are out there to make money and not generate lawsuits. I've studied Kenpo for a long time. I don't think it's the best art but I had a great teacher who taught us to end threats as quickly as possible with overwhelming violence, not to fight someone, most the best stuff was taught to us who stayed after class. In the end a punch is a punch no matter what name someone attaches to it. I'm sure I can find Kenpo in Krav Maga and Krav Maga in Kenpo.
I'd recommend going to classes and watch them see what you think of it. A good school will sell itself. Krav, boxing, mma are all great places to start. I'd steer clear of kenpo or any Chinese /Japanese arts unless you know the place is legit, most schools nowerdays are teaching nonsense.
This is the truth. Although I had a buddy who did a form of kenpo that was a beast. Actually got into trouble cuz he beat the living shit out of 4 dudes who corner him, all wrestlers. One guy I wouldn’t fuck with
It’s not so much the style but the teacher, but more importantly, you. Not shitting on krav magra by any means but these are flashy choreographed videos of an expert. You can’t teach those high kicks to somebody that doesn’t spend considerable time each stretching.
Most important thing is to pick a style that has a decent focus on sparring, conditioning, and how to actually take a hit.
.....
I'm too old, and hurt too much now to get back at it although I would like to.
