Lapua Brass

I processed the Lapua brass I just received, on first blush, I have to say this is some high quality stuff, finish is great and random measurements show it is very, very consistent from one cartridge to the next. The necks are discolored from what I assume is an annealing process done at the factory, though I'm not to sure it took. Running through the sizer die, body lubed and neck dry lubed, when the neck sizer engages it is tough, entering and exiting!! I anneal a lot of brass in my work and the process makes it butter soft and pliant, this doesn't feel that way at all. Over all I am very happy with the purchase and looking forward to .312 diameter groups at 100 Yards.

Most of the reloaders find the annealing marks sexy. Lapua doesn't tumble them off on purpose. Lapua is top of the line. Which caliber is it?

.223 It will be an accuracy challenge I have given myself for a .223 Wylde I put together.

I don't size the new brass, it's already sized. I just use Lee collett die as a mandrel to get rid of any dents in the necks. Just the stem of the die without collett touching the case. No lubrication required.

I recently bought 100 in 6 Creed. There is a definite "feeling" of quality. They weigh more than my usual Hornady brass. I weighed each one and they're very consistent. I'll see how they work through the dies and if they are worth the money in the place it matters.

You are more trusting of the manufacturing process than I am. After my treatment I believe I will be starting out with all the cartridges as close to each other in measurement as possible. That may not be important to you, it is to me. If I have a flyer I want to know, without a doubt. it is me and not something I neglected to do.

You only get uniform brass when you size DOWN fired brass. When you do that to the brass which is already sized, it has the opposite effect on uniformity. Micrometer case gauge will show you that.

You didn't make a mistake. I used to do the same thing using the same reasoning, but experience and listening to colleagues taught me a better way of doing it. Either way, there will be no measurable impact on group sizes, the shooter error will be the dominating factor, but better is better. Also, less work hardening of the brass, more times it can be reloaded.

I load Laupua for the wildcat 243 LBC. It is top notch brass but it's costly and that's the only caliber I buy it for. Being it's a wildcat, one pushes the envelope a bit with pressures so the Lapua brass tends to have better case life than other brands.

Do any of you guys experiment with the COAL in wringing out your accuracy? I will be using 65gr. Sierra Gameking, cuz thats what I got at the moment, and there is quite a lot of wiggle room. I know it would affect velocity some, but does it have an effect in tightening or loosening your groups? Tough finding components.

I hate Lapua brass when new, the primer pockets are very tight. Sometimes the brass has "staining" from the foam in the box that looks like a poor annealing job. Enjoy the brass, you will have many firings from it.

I bought a bunch of Lapua brass Only because that was all I could get at the time. its pretty expensive but I hope it shoots well. I read you can get 10 or more reloads out it which would make it more cost effective.

Never used that bullet, only Sierra Matchkings. However this is a magazine length bullet and should be loaded to fit in the magazine. Sierra 80gr HPBT are designed to be loaded longer than magazine length. It's made for longer distances over 300 yards. I usually load them close to 0.030" off the lands. It's not critical or scientific, had a few good days with that load and stuck with that number. You do need special measuring gauges to periodically measure the throat as it erodes and make changes to COAL accordingly.
You don't need to go through all this trouble to shoot at 100 yards with magazine length bullets, I only mentioned all that to show off.

Unfortunately the quality of brass of all brands is going down continuously. Lapua is no exception, still a good brass, but not what it used to be. 10 reloadings is very optimistic these days.

I like Petersons brass,,,cheaper and just as good as Lapua but they dont make brass for the 223
