But these look to be awfully nice, are good sized, and seem to be functional (though perhaps poorly cleaned after firing )

These are nice but I stopped buying toy cannons when I bought a real one.

If they are brass as they appear to be, brass work hardened and becomes brittle, or little bombs. Naval brass, or bronze is probably good to go but I would pass.

I have never heard that Manris. I will have to look into it, this thing has fired off many pounds of black powder for decades, much to the delight of friends and family. I used to mix in Titanium chips for night firing and it would light up half a square mile!

Black powder for signal fire is pretty safe since the barrel is unrestricted and the loads are very light. Firing any projectiles, not so much.

The Naval Cannon (my obvious favorite), is described as having a MAGNETIC Barrel, hence, most likely, steel.
