I’ve been hearing about these high efficiency heat pumps and they seem to good to be true. I’ve read for $1 of input you can get $7 of energy out of them or something crazy like that. I don’t see how that’s possible. I get how they work, but it just seems to good to be true.

It's called Coefficient Of Performance or COP heat pumps are more like 2 or three.
Considering electricity is 100 percent efficient that's pretty good . Most pumps will only be edged out by the most efficient natural gas furnace. That are much better than propane or oil. As far as cost of running one.

Air to air heat pumps are useless below about 30F. They go to all resistance heat.

Ground source heat pumps are universal for all climates but you have to drill some serious bore holes to make them work. Money in them bore holes.

That is not true . I have a heat pump/heat strip and its my only heat source . It works to about 5 degrees before the backup heat strip are being used about 50 percent of the time. It has kept my house reasonably warm below zero. A few years ago I had a -9 night and it still kept it warm . Bonus is the Air con mode is very cheap to run .
Down side is they are pretty noisy and run all the time . And once and a while maybe once or twice a season.require me to manually defrost them by turning the a/c on for 10 minutes.

fuuuuuuuck, I retired to early, I see thens of thousands of dollars going into Heating company coffers. The price of a Heat pump just doubled, maybe tripled

What the cost of this compared to gas? I e tried to look up the prices for high efficiency heat pumps and it’s very vague, but seeing upwards to $25,000.

My parents put in a heat pump this past year. They used it for most of the winter. They still also have their hydronic heat system. Their bills were cut down to about a half of normal. Keep in mind normal is last year normal, not this year inflated propabe price normal so it probably saved them more than half in reality.

Price wise it was around $7000 for the system itself (not the labor). They didn't need to do much to replace it so the labor wasn't that much. Home size is about 3500 square feet. They reused the existing ducting from the central ac and converted it to the heat pump which does both ac and heat.

its not just NYC I work for a residential home bldr here in Greece NY and our next section all homes will be electric only. We got the current section a get out of jail card but cant the next section about to open up this summber. All homes there will be Electric ONLY. PERIOD

so i have a new house built .. all electric .. then i buy a 30 yr old 10KW diesel Generator hook it to house .. and run it rich and roll coal .. wish i was rich lol

Maybe I should get myself a coal fired boiler and a steam engine and make an actual coal powered backup generator...

Hopefully I'll have my solar soon.

Have batteries and Inverters sitting in the garage now. Just waiting for them to get panels and install.

Yeah I get how they work, but I’ve been promised many things by .gov and not many have come true. I was promised a job 10-12 years ago by .gov and it didn’t happen either. I’ve only heard this claim on one local radio ad so I’m skeptical. Of course .gov is subsidizing this.

Regardless of political or ideological allegiance, anyone who works for .Gov at any level, whether politician or bureaucrat...
