Legislation proposed last week in the Assembly would give New York voters a chance to veto laws.
The legislation, proposed by Long Island lawmaker Fred Thiele, would create the "people's veto" in New York.
The law would allow for residents to create a petition on any law that has a tax or fee impact. If the petition reaches enough signatures -- which Thiele writes should be at least equivalent to five percent of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election.
The full petition would have to be submitted to the state before the 90th day after a bill becomes the law. At that time, the law would be suspended until a vote is held in the next general election.
