Laws on bringing a pistol out of state for work - Saratoga County

Hi y’all, I’m new to the forum so sorry if this isn’t posted in the right area.

Basically I just accepted a new job that would have me working out of state for 3-4 months at a time and I would like to bring my pistol so I have a form of self defense. The state I will be working in is a constitutional carry state so I don’t believe there will be any issues with having my pistol while I’m there however I was wondering what the laws are regarding traveling out of New York with my pistol. Ive only had my Saratoga County pistol permit for a couple months so it’s designated for hunting & target.

First off, welcome to the forum.
Check the laws of the state you will be working in. If they are constitutional carry, that is a good sign, but it could mean only for residents of that state. So I would verify that and also see if they recognize the NYS permit. If you can get a non-resident permit for the state you will be working in I would do it regardless of them being CC.

On the USA Carry map from the link posted above you can enter your NY resident (as well as any non resident permits you can get) to check on retropocity. Insights on traveling under Federal law for states that won't recognize your permits are on the USA Carry website. If you are flying, the TSA sight gives info but we would need to know your NY departure airport in order to help with our experience (e.g. Stewart would be different than let's say Kennedy, LaGuardia, or NJ's Newark.

It looks like Oklahoma regognizes NYS permits. They do also offer non-resident permits.

Thank you for all the info and resources y’all rock. I will be driving and from what I’m seeing on the map it looks like the only states I have to drive through that don’t honor my permit is PA and Illinois. Is that like a only stop to get gas in those states and keep moving type of situation or drive hours out of my way to avoid those states situation?

You should be fine to have the pistol unloaded and secured in your vehicle. I don't think either of these states require a permit to own (other than Illinois which has an foid card, but that is for residents and not people from another state passing through) The issue that could get you in trouble would be concealed carrying in these states. Just keep your pistol unloaded and secured off your person when going through non-friendly states and you should be fine.

It's been my experience that the "restrictions" on your permit, mean nothing to other states.

...But as I said, do the research and look up each states laws for yourself. Contact their state police if need be and ask.

Oklahoma is a constitutional carry state.

Travel by FOPA and enjoy freedom while in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma won’t even know what restrictions are. If you’re stopped leaving NYS with your pistol you’re going to a range or shooting completion in Oklahoma. It’s likely that you will shoot your gun while there anyway so it’s truthful. Also just get a PA permit since it’s super easy to do and you’re covered. I’d avoid Illinois or unload and lock the gun as mentioned. Become familiar with the federal law that allows you to transport your gun through states in this manner. The only problem with Illinois is if you become stuck there and have to spend the night you are technically breaking the law. Will it be a problem? Likely no, but if it’s not too much trouble to avoid it I would.
