Layoffs announced at General Electric in Schenectady

General Electric announced Tuesday it is laying off about 200 employees at its Schenectady facility and will not fill another 25 open positions, further cutting a workforce that has seen repeated job cuts.

The international electrical giant -- by far the city's most-prominent business -- cited a decline in power equipment sales and issues facing the international power industry, including many countries reducing their reliance on large-scale power plants and price pressures.

Well then they are not losing jobs just finding cheaper state work out of. Smart move for them.

There are acres of empty lots that GE owns in Schenectady. They razed the empty buildings so they could reduce their property tax bills. It's almost a shock to see there are any GE employees left in that town.

Schenectady is in bad shape. The city's fortunes rose and fell with GE. There are a ton of GE retirees around there who are now in shock given the recent drop in the stock price. Lots of pissed off people. My wife has family in that area. I can't believe just how far that company has fallen in the past 10 years.

GE took the Kodak and Xerox model, when in June GE was kicked off from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, that was a stark warning.

Back in the 1960s, just in one building (building seven) on Electronics Parkway in Syracuse GE had over 5,000 workers.

Yes, Americans do not buy radios anymore but they buy mobile devices which could have been built there, we did not have to lose our manufacturing base, a F**k America mentality, plantation capitalism, and greed drove it offshore,,,,,,,,,,,,,,worry not those at the top will get their golden parachutes as they raid what pensions funds they can, screwing the retirees--at least that is what usually happens.
