The President is also the military leader, and well within his rights to acknowledge a salute, with one of his own. A salute is the accepted Official form of respect.

Neither presidents Clinton or Obama were in the military and both saluted the Marine guard when boarding or leaving Marine-1 on the Whitehouse lawn. Clinton was rather sloppy about it and never, in my opinion, gave a good salute, Obama however must have had someone show him how and mostly gave good salutes. Once when he forgot to return the salute while boarding the helicopter he came back off and shook the hand of the Marine. Definitely not required but a bit of a gentlemanly class act.

Back in the day, everyone respected the President. Even if you didn't vote for him, you respected him. Even if you didn't like what he said, you respected him.
But in today's society... They're bashing him because he salutes a fallen soldier? This President has the utmost respect & gratitude for our soldiers - the men & women that sacrifice everything to protect us and this country.
