Legality On Faux/Fake/Mock Suppressors

Yes I know it doesn’t have any benefit and it is pure cosmetic, I still want one. I seen one of my local gun store selling one that was attached on one of the AR so I wanted to know the legality on it. I called safe act and they pretty much said it was good but knowing NY. I think it was conflicting with something about muzzle break or flash hider but it’s neither but correct me if I’m wrong.

It's a big ass thread protector. Jut make sure it's as "permanent" as you feel it needs to be for your rifle to be featureless.

As BDinPutnam mentioned, it must be pinned and welded to the barrel and made a permanent attachment to the barrel. But why? Why add any unnecessary weight to an AR? Sort of defeats the purpose of having an aluminum framed weapon.

Additionally, you are required to bear the burden of proof that it is not a real suppressor. So if an officer thinks its real because he saw it in the back of your vehicle, he can jam you up, arrest you, and confiscate it and let you go through the legal system to sort it out. He won't care if you have a receipt for it. You'll have to prove it to a judge or the DA prosecuting you.

The thing I left out is that some people will use them to make a less than 16" barrel 16" per ATF requirements for rifles so you want to follow ATF guidance on what "permanent" means to them. Barrel length is a federal thing not a NY thing.

Nah man it just peeked my interest and wanted to know the legality of it. I’ll probably just get an actual suppressor once I become a LEO.

I will say almost everything I have has some actual intended "purpose". Except maybe the .222 unless you count "checkbox: FREE STUFF" as an intended purpose.

Because looks matter. If looks didn’t matter then there wouldn’t still be wood and steel guns or revolvers with shiny finishes. Some guns are for hunting, some for target shooting, some for self defense, and some just for fun.
I had a fake suppressor on a featureless 308 AR10 and the added weight on the end of the barrel helped with muzzle rise somewhat like a brake. It’s perfectly ok to have a gun that serves no other purpose then to put a smile on your face.

I just found out about this last night. I will be purchasing one. What caught my interest was the dead air pyro enhanced muzzle brake a bit pricey. What also caught my interest was the SureFire Blast regulator (WARDEN MUZZLE DEVICE)

I bought a really inexpensive upper in .300 Blackout that had a fake suppressor on it. I got it removed and replaced it with a permanently attached device that looks like a standard A2 flash hider, but with no holes, making it just a barrel extension. Nothing against anyone who likes them, but I didn't want dead length/weight on a rifle I was trying to make as short and handy as possible.

I still have a .30 caliber (.308, .300 Blk, etc.) fake suppressor in my junk parts bin. If anyone wants one for shipping plus a few bucks, feel free to PM me.

Usually people want the shortest rifle possible. A rifle that is a little handier indoors. Those that can SBR it. Others make it into a pistol. Nobody really builds an AR with a 20 inch barrel anymore unless it’s a longer range competition gun or a nostalgic gun.

Usually people want a rifle that they could put more rounds downrange with. So they buy 30 rd magazines for it.

But here in NY, people will deliberately make their rifles longer and fix the magazine so that they can limit themselves from putting rounds downrange.

Just a response to Devil Dog Corporal's frustration. He's bangin his head against the wall that we NYers are out making our rifles less tactically sound because of our state's laws. I say the flag sums it up his frustration because we're a state in distress with our constitutional rights being arbitrarily trampled.

just get an airsoft one. I am not an expert but there are some many decent replicas
that they serve the cosmetic / collection / wall hanger role very well w/o the headaches and wondering
if that is going to be a problem.
